antz Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 what do they do exactly? payday is tommorow and im contemplating on getting one
flyingbanana Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 strenthen the top mounts so the body cant flexi has much....worth while getting one
tim Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 they stop the inner wing/struts moving under heavy cornering,if u get 1 get a weld on strut bar, then u can put it so its out of the way of the spark plugs, bolt on 1s arent much cop
antz Posted February 22, 2007 Author Report Posted February 22, 2007 im not getting a weld in one. plus itll be an oval one i need
flyingbanana Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 make sure you get the right size hole has mk1 and mk2 are different sizes i think large one is 110mm from mem
antz Posted February 22, 2007 Author Report Posted February 22, 2007 ill get it from g.s.escorts if he has one so hell know which i need
tim Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 oval 1s arent al that good as they still flex, take a read of this http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthread. ... trut+brace
antz Posted February 22, 2007 Author Report Posted February 22, 2007 sounds a right pain in the arse im not welding one in though! no way! ill do without
escort new boy Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 ants wont need the big hole one his car is 1980 W so it will be the smaller type later shell
GWtaylor Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 A weld in one is best but a bolt on one is ok and will improve abit i have had strut braces on every car and will be desiging my own weld in rear one on mine in summer
steve mk2 Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 is it possible to get rear strut braces for the shocks or is that not needed??
james p Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 i dint think it was needed cause of the leaf springs and that bar that goes across the back behind the seat
orionmojo Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 i was told not to get one on mine as with the quality of the build of the car and the way they were designed etc that the chassis needs to flex. strut braces used to pull the car apart so to speak.
Retromotorsport Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 The rear of the car has a brace... the floor, the front however has a hole ... a big one with an engine in it .. also the dampers at the rear arnt doing a lot .. more likley to be pulled through the floor than pushe up.. unless you gone too far with lowering and the dampers are hitting their internal stops ...... in which case change them as its dangerous
v6pop Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 Antz,bolt-ons are fine. I ran a bolt on strut brace on my mk1 escort, ran very high spring rates, very sticky slick tyres and raced in sprints and hill climb events with great success......a bolt-on will more than cope with your needs.
