Andy060172 Posted December 5, 2016 Report Posted December 5, 2016 Hi Can anyone help or advise please? My wipers on my 1974 mk1 are so bloody slow there not worth using. Is there an upgrade available or would a new wiper motor sort it? Thanks Andy
colr6 Posted December 5, 2016 Report Posted December 5, 2016 Be worth checking the spindles or ball joints haven't seized up.
JP. Posted December 5, 2016 Report Posted December 5, 2016 You could try ( works most of the times on Capri's as they have the same issues ) lubricate the spindle that comes out of the car ( where the wiper arm sits on ). That spindle runs inside a bush without bearings. The bush gets corroded inside making the spindle tighten up and going slower. I do not mean that big alloy bush you can remove, I mean the bush as part of the mechanism. The bush with the threat on it. Remove the wiper arms, Remove that plastic cups that's sits beneath it. Turn on you wipers. You will see the spindle running inside a thin bush with thread on the outside that holds the big nut. Put some old clothes inside the car under the dash to prevent any lubricant messing your interior. Lubricate the spindle with WD40 or similar with your wipers on so all the lube gets penetrated between spindle and bush while moving. Within a minute you will see them going faster. After that use some thick oil ( engine oil, gear oil whatever ) to finally lube. Its an easy trick without mayor wrenching needed and works most of the times.
