Stevieg2207 Posted June 14, 2017 Report Posted June 14, 2017 Hi all Am in the process of restoring my mk2RS and have decided to put in 5 speed box. Will The bell housing and gear stick from my 4 speed Fit the new box. If there's anything else I need for its install could you please advise Thanks Steve
OSF Contributor Mexican Gerbil Posted June 14, 2017 OSF Contributor Report Posted June 14, 2017 You need type 9 Bell housing. The steel ones are a bit big for the tunnel. You might need to modify the tunnel. The alloy ones are a better fit from what I've heard. The stick will need converting to fit a type 9. All parts avalible online form various people. You might need to move the hole back for the gear stick and also change your Prop shaft.
HotRodMatt Posted June 14, 2017 Report Posted June 14, 2017 I think the Type E bellhousing is the same as the Type 9 so give it a shot if you don't already have one. I have a steel bellhousing in mine and although I relieved the tunnel beforehand, I reckon you'd get away with not doing so if you are careful. Dropping the front crossmember while fitting the engine/gearbox may help. The gearbox hole needs moving back something like 3 - 3.5" and the transmission tunnel brace will need removing to allow this. If you measure right you can cut a section out of the top of the tunnel and turn it 180° then weld it back in.
Snapper Posted June 14, 2017 Report Posted June 14, 2017 I think the gearbox mount is further back on a 5 speed so mounting will need modifying, there are also mounting blocks that drop the box down
Stevieg2207 Posted June 14, 2017 Author Report Posted June 14, 2017 Ok thank guys, A little bit more involved than I thought.I'll start looking round for parts and prices Thanks Steve
HotRodMatt Posted June 15, 2017 Report Posted June 15, 2017 If you use a spot weld drill bit to remove the tunnel brace you could weld that in further back too. Plenty of us haven't though. Sent from my SM-A320FL using Tapatalk
YellowTaxi Posted June 19, 2017 Report Posted June 19, 2017 A bit of clariciation required. assuming its a genuine RS Mk2 shell (or mex). Type 9 fits directly to RS2 alloy bellhousing. Tunnel will not need modification. Mounting points will need mod. (moving further back or extension plates). Hole will be in the right place. Prop will fit. you will need a 5sp gearstick, either make a spacer for quick shift or buy online. Hope that helps.

Exactly - i've got the RS bellhousing straight to the Type 9 and the stick is pretty much central in the std. hole. RS's had the std escort tunnel brace hacked out for clearance from the factory. I've used the GS Escorts relocation mounts to allow correct positioning of the gearbox mount. I've got a quick shift stick which is a bit buzzy but does avoid smacking the lever into the handbrake when going into 2nd and 4th (not so much).
mk2 matt Posted June 22, 2017 Report Posted June 22, 2017 tunnel WILL kneed modding. if using relocation mounts gearbox just touches front of gearbox mount, put a jack in and jack the tunnel out 10 mm . if moving gearbox mount back ( about 100mm ) tunnel is ok speedo cable just reaches and i mean just, use sierra one, but if you get after market one the end that goes on the gearbox is generally too thick so the cerclip that holds it on won't fit
