Someone told me having a roll cage could be cause to revoke historic tax classification. 

I spent some.time yesterday reading through the rules and there seems to be nothing specific to roll cages. Chassis modifications can be a problem but there is a specific caveat that they're OK if it can be clearly demonstrated the same modifications were done either during production years, or within 10 years of production ending. 

That should mean that as long as someone can demonstrate that a roll cage was fitted to a road going MK1 escort by 1985, they're OK for historic use. 

Any experts who can confirm or deny my thoughts? 

The rules also say modifications to running gear are allowed if the purpose is to improve efficiency or safety. That should allow almost anything anyone would want to do with their brakes or suspension, right? Rear disks, for example?

That's how I interpret it, as you say most mods fit into that statement.

Think it’s more like turning into a space frame, adding a V8 hemmi lump and adding truck style air brakes that would cause it to be Q plated then not tax free

Q plates and Historic tax status are pretty well separate issues. For example, you can drop a Cossie YB turbo in your MK1 escort without getting a Q plate, but it's no longer eligible for historic status.

Keep the original registration number

Your vehicle must have 8 or more points from the table below if you want to keep the original registration number. 5 of these points must come from having the original or new and unmodified chassis, monocoque bodyshell or frame.

That's useful. I didn't know exactly how the Q plate thing works.
