jimbo Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 Thought I better start investigaing the wobble on the car's steering/braking. Was convinced it was the wheel balance or a warped disc. Jacked up the front and got a tell-tale bearing wobble, prised off the cap and found the nut to be just about finger-tight My ever-diminishing tool box was lacking the wrong socket or spanner for the job, so I have had to make do with tightening it by using a pair off long nosed pliers. Hopefully will hold to the weekend. Good news is that the wobble seems a lot better!
over_head_cam Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 I hope you put the lock cap and the split pin back in
jimbo Posted August 13, 2007 Author Report Posted August 13, 2007 Yes indeedy. I can't help think that they been all that's stopped me losing a wheel......
GJUK Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 WRCdave was telling me about how one of his wheels feel off when he collected his car some time ago. When i picked up my beast I felt a wobble which turned into a knocking noise. While on the motorway although i was eager to get the car home and my dad was following in his m3 and wated to get home ASAP! I pulled over, and found the nuts on the wheels to be finger tight. I'm not pointing the blame, it was my fault not to check this on the car before i set off but. SCARY shit! Jon
Miller Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 Christ! my 4 door has wobbled under braking since I got it but Im going to check it out now youve brought this up. I do love old fords but they do seem to keep coming up with novel ways to kill us, so far this month *Ive ran out of petrol going up hill due to non existant tank baffles on a mega busy duel carriage way at night. *Had flat battery when returning 20 mins later with fuel meaning I had to bump start the bugger backwards on said duel carriage way. *Had two Mk2 Escort bonnets crash down on my head on the same day. *Had complete braking failure when pulling into motorway service station *And had an Escort pin me againtst another escort when I let the jack down on hill forgetting to pull the handbrake after undersealing the rear arches (although the blame partially falls at my feet on this one) . And now I half expect all 4 wheels to fall of next time I pop down to the shops. Going by things having been it will then burst into flames and all the doors will jam shut and il never be seen again. So I should better go check the hubs..... just to be on the safe side
sambo Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 I had a steering knuckle shear before! that was scary, all of a sudden having no steering!! Luckily i was only doing about 10mph but it could have been worse!! Now i have a GP4 one on there!
MK2Ed Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 I had a steering knuckle shear before! that was scary, all of a sudden having no steering!! Luckily i was only doing about 10mph but it could have been worse!! Now i have a GP4 one on there! Bloody hell - it's difficult to check for metal fatigue as well. But TBH I'd like to get my car on a ramp (instead of crawling around under it) and spend a day going over it - anyone know anyone who rents out ramp?
