Cheers guys, I'll bring it in to the alternator place near Tolworth girls and see what they say.

I've just come back from a drive in my Mk2 and the little red battery lght is starting to glow. The last time this happened it was the regulator diode on the alternator and a very nice RAC man changed the alternator for me. Problem was that was only 2 years and 4000miles ago. I've gone through 3 alternators in 8000miles. I've already got a smaller crankshaft pulley but inevitably the alternator prob still gets subjected to more revs and more vibration as standard on my modified engine. Does anyone know an especially long lasting replacement/make/type I can get? It doesnt need to be high output.

I think Track 'n' Road near Dartford have decades of experience with this engine.

That's so annoying it would send me into an apoplectic rage (I like that word. On the vibration issue, the first thing that springs to my mind is the propshaft. Is it a 2-piece job? What do you think of the new gearbox ratios?

I know what you mean, doing it all the time can get tedious (I'm talking about filming). I'll get some filming done next time. I have a micro camera I am currently testing (see my youtube channel) and I have a digital camera that takes pretty good film.

When I heard the song I thought it was going to be a poorly matched rap song that they use for the low-riders and hip hop videos in the States. But its got much more of a Mo Town blues feel to it, I love it, its perfect and a def download for me. I hereby Nominate Dan to be our Official OSF Camera Man!

If the clutch fork is on the wrong side then yes, generally, the bell housing can be changed so that it exits on the correct side. Contact 'Real Steel' in Uxbridge. They specialise in Yank V8's and gearboxes and deal with these all the time. They will probably have the correct bellhousing in stock. An alternative possibility is butchering your current one (cut a window on the other side). I would go for the new bellhousing.

If yours is a 1.6GL I think it should have a 3.54:1 diff like mine. I have the same wheel size as Dan, a 4 speed and at 7100rpm I am doing a GPS verified 120mph on the 175/50's. At 70mph I am doing 4100rpm so it is noisy. For long distance journeys I will just cruise at 55-60mph, its still noisy but the acceleration is great - perfect for B-roads, GTi killing and those Welsh Mountains

My brother had a V8 capri. When you say LHD gearbox what do you mean? Is the clutch fork on the wrong side? As for axles, the Volvo 240 axle is popular in drag circles for a good reason. It is strong as Fxck. Plus you get a rear disc brakes and a choice of LSD's as they are popular for off-roaders in the states. Its about 20kg heavier than an Atlas Other options are the Ford 8" axle (strong, my brother had this one) or 9" axle (even stronger/heavier). Both of these have a choice of LSD as they are also very popular in the States. One consideration is that I believe all of the above are 5 stud wheel fitment.

What diff ratio have you got mike? As Vista says tyre profile can make a big difference to gearing. Going from 60 to 50 profile lowers your gearing by 9% if I remember my napkin calculations correctly. Have a look at the boxhill photos I posted from our drive. Mine and Posse's are 50 profile. The Mk1 RS2000 and Yellow MK2 are 60 profile. If your going to go for 50 profile then I think you need to drop the suspension by 2" to make it look right.

Well I found a fan belt on the way to Boxhill. What a fantastic day! There were 8 of us, all rwd escorts and we did a well paced 100 mile loop. We stopped for a drink and a laugh a few times but I'll let the pics do the talking. Mike, Dale, Darren, Phil, Willsy (and the others whose name I forget) it was nice to meet you.

Looks like fun. Mk3's have grown on me. They have definitely got better with age.

Track n Road are good but be prepared for an 'interesting' set of social skills from the one they call Grumpy Steve. HT/Vulcan are just over the bridge at Brands Hatch and are really good.
