Buying a car that bas been written of and repaired
ChristophStone replied to ChristophStone's topic in OLD SKOOL FORD CHAT
Who can inspect a car for this type of thing? Is it expensive? I don't know anyone personally who can look at it and it's a good 2 hours drive away from home. edit: I'm not planning to sell it on any time soon but if the seller won't lower the price because of it, it does seem like a false economy. -
Buying a car that bas been written of and repaired
ChristophStone replied to ChristophStone's topic in OLD SKOOL FORD CHAT
This is i wasn't looking for any sings of repairs when I went up there because i wasn't aware. The o/s door didn't line up properly along the back edge but other than that there was nothing i can think of. I don't know if they guy just doesn't know, or wasn't saying. -
Just done a text check on one of the cars I'm looking at, and it has come back as a Cat C write off, repair costs exceed pre-accident value, loss date: 30.07.1998. No record of a VIC inspection. I found this out after going to look at it, owner didn't mention it and I could see no evidence of it at the time, but of course that was to my untrained eyes. It has 12 months MOT and tax, full respray, running gear seems fine. Is it something I should worry about? It's a lot of money is all. Any implications?

I see what you mean Tony but I think the skinny tyres are only half the problem - there would also be a problem if you went with 185/70's without the white letters because it just wouldn't look as oldskool. Rubber bands look great on slammed escorts but your capri just isn't that type of car, the balloon tyres look the nuts on it - but like I said, it would still be lacking something if you got rid of the white letters. I would try dropping it another inch is possible before giving up on the lower profile tyres though, you mgiht be suprised.

They do them in 175/70 or 205/60, would either of those not work?

Do they look any good though? I know you can get pens that do them too but I always assumed actual raised white letters would look better and the stick on ones or the pens would look a bit naff. -

Cooper do their cobra tyres in 175/70/13 if you wanted to keep the white lettered look. Bit tall and thin but I haven't found any others currently on the market that aren't 205/60/13. Bit ghey really, because I really want white letters for mine whe I get it. -

How much we looking at for a strip, prep and respray of, saaaay, mk1 capri, in gloss black? Got someone down here who can do it but if it's going to cost less to go cross country, I could be interested. -
I'm looking for a mk1, got money saved up that could get this one back on the road, but your a looong way away. Anyone put an estimate on the cost of welding/mechanical work/new front seats to get this one back on the road? I've got a bit of cash but not limitless. Only if you're interested in moving it on, of course.

Whats in the rest of the package?

I got outbid by £50. Gutted.

Cheers Sparky! He's never met me before but he came to see a capri with me this evening, took two hours looking over the car and telling me what was good and what was wrong with it - because I wouldn't have had a clue on my own! He then rang around a garage and a spray shop to get me a rough idea on how much it would cost to get it back on the road and painted. If I wasn't on a student budget I'd buy you a beer fella, top man Now just a waiting game to see if I can afford it Cheers again mate Chris

Does anyone know what this sort of work would cost? Just to get it on the road, with a pinto and 5 speed box, in primer if necessary, and then on to the prep and paint? My real worry is that I would need to trailor it straight from wherever it is now to a bodyshop, because I have nowhere to put it here. And I have no trailor and no pulling car! Sparky, thanks for your offer. I will ring the guy tomorrow morning and see when he is available, then call/text you if that's ok? I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to this, I just want a nice car really. I've done up an old austin before, from the ground up, but that was in a dry workshop with all the parts clean and ready to go on! Cheers everyone Chris

It's all a question of cost. 2.0 pinto + gearbox + everything to do the conversion new brake and fuel parts suspension mechanics bodywork repairs prep and paint None of it I can do myself. So I'd have to hand it over to a shop and give the a load of cash and a timescale to get it sorted. I just don't know how long that would take and how much it would cost. There's another yellow mk1 on ebay at the moment with the reserve set at £3500 - it's not a colour I'd chose but it has uprates suspension and brakes, pinto engine and five speed box, it's all done and no work needed. So i's a toss up between getting everything in one package but compromising on colour etc, or starting from scratch with a shall and spending possibly much more.

It's at the top of my original post mate?

Can North Hants Tyres not find anything suitable, retroglam? If you're going to be selling your chrome rossies, PM me a price....

Ebay Capri It's 5 minutes from me and I want to go check it out, but I have no garage and no time, so if I decided to use it as a blank canvas I'd have to get it taken straight to a bodyshop/restorer to get it back on the road. How much is that likely to cost? I like the idea of being able to do my own thing with it. but then again if it's going to be mega bucks I don't have the finances. It would need a pinto and manual 'box conversion to suit my tastes, and any brake/suspension/fuel line repairs to get it roadworthy, then body work and respray. How much would this cost at somewhere like Capri Restorations, or similar shops? Just mulling things over at the moment. Ebay Capri

My cheapest quote on a 1.6 mk1 cappa: £1099 on a 3.0: £1550. Strange how it goes. But that's due to my age.
-
If it was me, I'd keep the '77 ghia that belonged to your friend obviously, the mark 2 broadspeed, and the mark one 1.6, by the way.
-
How much do you want for any of the mk1's ? My finances have been a bit strange recently but I am still considering coming down to see the 2.0GT of yours sometime. I am now interested in the others aswell, got any figures? Condition? Cheers CT

Good time to buy though, if you can find someone who realises that their car is not worth as much as they think.
