mossy Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 ive been missing my capri and have recently found it on turbosports... I have also been looking for a turbodiesel car as a run about, it never clicked untill a mate of mine mentioned putting a mondeo turbodiesel into a capri.. i know the zetecs fit with a bit of fiddling with the mounts and gearbox's....would this be any different for a diesel, Also what else would be needed? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
allanmex Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 wouldnt an 1800 td from a sierra be easier?
GT_Jim Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 start looking in ppc as they are doing a diesel westfield
ratman Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 Good luck with this I have ponderd the idea of putting a late shape diesel motor in a mk1 cortina estate Cool looks and bundles of fuel milage and one fook off cool tow car
john_3.0s Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 wouldnt an 1800 td from a sierra be easier? would be easier but their gutless (i know as I did over 200k in one) your much better off with a TDCI but of course there is the additional issues surrounding finding a gearbox/bell housing to match (maybe from a transit?) and the electronics. I have been toying with the idea of a yank v8 oil burner in my granada but that old essex just keeps on going!
Slik 50 Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 In all honastly I would stay well clear of the TDCI engine, Yes they are quick but to complicated with all the ECU's, Fancy injectors and duel mass flywheels its all digital bollox. I know a guy who fitted a a diesal engine out of a toyota or nissan or something simaler into a capri When he comes in I will ask what he used if you fancy?
john_3.0s Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 yeah the DMFs are rubbish and prone to failure. Dont think transits use them though so you may be better off with a complete rwd transit install. Wiring it up with all the sensors would be a mission though
mossy Posted April 3, 2007 Author Report Posted April 3, 2007 someone else has suggested a vauxhall diesel with a carlton box? im trying to gather as much info as possible atm! so anything is a help!
Gonzo Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 i wouldnt say the 1800 is exactly 'gutless'. the old man's got a fiesta courier with the non-turbo engine and for a diesel it gets up to 80 pretty sharp and will cruise at 80-90 all day. so i imagine the mondeo td with intercooler should shift pretty well, and theyre pretty rev-happy too. the na seems to love a heavy right foot. one problem though: on the 'back' of the engine [other end to the cambelt] there's a fuel sensor of some sort. dunno what it does. black box about 1"x2"x3-4". cut it out of the fuel system and disconnect it from the loom. caused no end of hassle on the van.
john_3.0s Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 i wouldnt say the 1800 is exactly 'gutless'. the old man's got a fiesta courier with the non-turbo engine and for a diesel it gets up to 80 pretty sharp and will cruise at 80-90 all day. one problem though: on the 'back' of the engine [other end to the cambelt] there's a fuel sensor of some sort. dunno what it does. black box about 1"x2"x3-4". cut it out of the fuel system and disconnect it from the loom. caused no end of hassle on the van. depends on your deffinition of "gutless" mate, might be ok in a fezzer but in a mondeo accelleration isnt too good, used to have to time the boost just right as off boost it takes ages to pick up off boost. I had two mondeo TDs ane they were both the same, although you can adjust the fueling and increase the boost they still aint anywhere as quick as a TDCI or even a TDDI but as you say once they are wound up 110 on the clock is possible. As for that box, i think its the EGR valve (not 100% as the n/a engine is layed out slightly differently for fueling etc) but they always play up.
Gonzo Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 well i was talking in diesel terms. theyre not that bad for an old engine with no fancy electronic crap to make em go faster.
john_3.0s Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 well they certainly take some abuse, 800 odd miles a week for 4 years with my right foot - fair play i reckon! my first mondeo TD had done 270 k when i scrapped is as the rack and lower arms needed doing and i was offered another for 300 quid. The second one went on to 210k (100k of mine) and was still going strong when i scrapped it (even after not servicing it for 40k odd)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. another option would be to have your capper converted to use gas as a second fuel option!!! the initial outlay will soon be made back with the saved fuel money!!! my friend has a yank with said coversion and it goes just as well and saves him bundels on squirt!! only a thought???
emu Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 one problem though: on the 'back' of the engine [other end to the cambelt] there's a fuel sensor of some sort. dunno what it does. black box about 1"x2"x3-4". cut it out of the fuel system and disconnect it from the loom. caused no end of hassle on the van. Ive always been told its a fuel heater.
Popuptoaster Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 2.5TD from a scorpio is about 120bhp i think and should fit, shifts the scorp along ok and goes for years, our cab did 250k with no major work needed.
escysean Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 What about VW/Audi 1.9TDI? I got VW Bora 1.9TDi 115 bhp and it's fast as well economical Did try to think of putting new 2.0 TDi from either VW or Audi to mk1 Escort but missus won't have it...... LOL
mossy Posted April 5, 2007 Author Report Posted April 5, 2007 just wondered if it has been done....as i dont have the space, time or money for experimentation....then to find it doesnt fit.
crapichris Posted April 7, 2007 Report Posted April 7, 2007 someone in the capri club has already fitted a Sierra 1800 diesel in a Mk1 Crapi. He was at the last Summer camp show - took him 2 weeks to get there though. Bright yellow it was when the smog cleared!
72mk1escort Posted April 7, 2007 Report Posted April 7, 2007 Dont put a diesel in OSF it just dont work
