jimbo Posted May 12, 2007 Report Posted May 12, 2007 Hi Folks, Once again my car is wetter on the inside than out, but (fanfare) I think I've sourced the leak. It is the windscreen rubber. Now the rubber is in good nick, so I'm gonna remove/reseal/replace. Any recommendations for a good sealant to use when I refit it? Cheers, Jim
jimbo Posted May 13, 2007 Author Report Posted May 13, 2007 Short and sweet answer. I'll look ikt up.....
escort21 Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 My mk2 escy did that...i changed the rubber and it was worse
V8ian Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 Have a look under the dashboard in both corners looking for RUST and HOLES
jimbo Posted May 14, 2007 Author Report Posted May 14, 2007 its great stuff and primer takes to it great Primer? Are you talking sealer for where panel edges meet or sealant for windscreens? Or does it do both? Cheers, Jim
Rick Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 motorhome builders use it on everything... sorry i just got a bit carried away, just thought id mention its paintable too
crapichris Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 I remember a thread about certain manufacturers windscreen rubbers ;eaking even when new. Haven't got one of those- have you?
steve mk2 Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 i havent got any kind of sealent in mine i just put the rubbers in??? u recon i should????
Rick Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 yeah me too^ but i didnt use sealer just in case the screen didnt go in right the first attempt. prob better to peel the edge up a bit before you put the silver trims in and pipe some under only time will tell if its neccessary
john_3.0s Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 how do you know its the screen mate? they also leak from the wiper bushes and door seals. It only takes a small hole to make a big damp patch
james p Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 how do you know its the screen mate? they also leak from the wiper bushes and door seals. It only takes a small hole to make a big damp patch mine leaked on the chassis rail sealed it up and leaks no more
arch Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 myn does this back and front an throu the heater sum how its rainin buckets now so it will be realli wet in there. a word of advice jimboshka take ur carpet up an ur underlay an soon as beacause the underlay is like a sponge an will stay soacked for weeks
beu_79 Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 mine leaked up at the top of the bulk head in the heater cowel was running down behind the centre console , had to take the whole dashboard etc out to filler it, and it leaked from around the windscreen too, sealant did the trick there all around the top as it was running down the inside.
jimbo Posted May 16, 2007 Author Report Posted May 16, 2007 It only takes a small hole to make a big damp patch Ah so true of many things in life ..... Thanks for all the pointers folks. Carpets and underlay are out and have been since February......They were under 2" of water, so it had to be done. I checked my chassis rails the day after visiting you, James. They're all good. The rubbers are pretty new looking, so I think they might require a bead around them. But I will also be checking out the rest of the bulkhead in July (spending a week working on the car at my in-laws) I will make sure I've got new bushes and gaskets for wipers, heater pipes, pedals, etc. Does anyone know where I can get these bits from? I'm determined to have a dry winter when it rolls back round. I will come back to this post and let keep you posted. Perhaps we can turn it into a how-to guide. Cheers, Jim
