Pye Man Posted June 6, 2007 Report Posted June 6, 2007 Who here thinks that the current generation of touring cars, pale in comparison to their counterparts of the 90s. Fair play they do have a few BMWs this season, which are good for tale out action. As well as a few more cars that look like the old touringcars. This is the era I like... I remeber goingt to Croft in 97, and being blown away by the look and sound of the cars. Then returning in 2001, when they changed and it just werent the same. Also Mansells race in 98 at Donnington. Best race I have ever seen.
Durham Fiesta Posted June 6, 2007 Report Posted June 6, 2007 i used to love touring car racing but its so dull now , not worth watching imo. Loved the era with the mondeo above too
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted June 6, 2007 Report Posted June 6, 2007 Got to be the Texaco Sierra Cosworths for me... Many a happy sunny weekend watching those race on TV when Jim was a lad Can't go back though... Can't go back

Many a happy sunny weekend watching those race on TV when Jim was a lad Can't go back though... Can't go back That was my first memory of motorsport when I was about 3 or 4 I guess. I remeber the RS500 charging around what on reflection was Oulton Park... Aaaaah happy days. theres hardly any good tin top racing about now. Gonna check out ford saloon car champs etc this year to see what they are like That should be kanny, the Ford saloon car championship. The only others I like are the DTM and Aussie V8s. Theres still somthing missing though compared to the glory days of the BTCC
tazrocks88 Posted June 6, 2007 Report Posted June 6, 2007 i still enjoy a good btcc race at brands or sometimes silverstone but not as good as it was back then!!!

bmxdave Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Touring cars is ghey now. Bring back the 60's or early 90's stuff. The cars they use now are nowhere near their road car equivilents. They spend hundreds of hours getting rebuilt with specialist parts, even with the newish S2000 rules. Theres no variety any more. If cars had to keep the original suspension set up, original tyre and wheel sizes, and only allowed some light engine modifications, not only would it be better to watch, itd be cheaper, and the big manufacturers would reenter. But obviously, 95% of all race directors and the FIA are far far too dim and bigheaded to realise this. Its just like watching NASCAR, every fookers got the same car, just a different body. Anyone ever seen the 80's Aussia ATCC championship? The cars had a massive variety. The usual Holden and Ford teams, but they had Volvo 240's, beemer 3 series and 6 series (in the same team, the drivers had choices) Mazda RX-7's, Skylines, the Jags and loads more. Best of all they where very much based on the road cars, so the equivilent road cars characteristics stood out. For example a 3 series was light on tyres and handled better, but a big Torana would proceed to rape it down the straights. Proper touring cars.

Rebirth of a cossie perhaps
V8ian Posted June 8, 2007 Report Posted June 8, 2007 Two periods of saloon racing really were good for me, late 60s when there were some real drivers of note driving for works teams including F1 drivers, and you could walk round the paddock and meet them, I was only a lad getting shown round the paddock at Crystal Pallace, Falcons, Fairlanes, Lotus Cortinas, Anglias, Loads of Minis, Escorts, and many more, and the mid 70s with the Thunder/Specal saloon racing, totally innovative racing, we ended up racing with a VW variant Fastback, built over a March F5000 tub powered by a Can Am all alloy Big block, from a stillborn Surtees Can Am car, the engine number was 001 and had beautiful cast Surtees Rocker covers, dont I wish we still has that engine
