NELLYSMK2 Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 Hi. Cutting a long story short, I have just purchased a 2dr mk2 escort 1.3 gear that I found rusting away in a car park, nothing strange there I here you say! BUT the said car happens to have a MK1 ESCORT LOTUS TWIN CAM ENGINE in it, complete with Webber twin 45’s. I have done a fair bit of research in this engine and by the look of it they have a fair bit of Heritage to them and are fairly sort after. Can anybody advise me on this, and how much it might be worth? Any info or comments would be appreciated.
antz Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 worth quite a bit. leave it in teh car. fix it up and go burn some rubber
NELLYSMK2 Posted August 19, 2006 Author Report Posted August 19, 2006 i am going to put the car back on the road, but a fancy a more upto date engine i.e zetec or cosworth need to sell this engine to fund it
antz Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 i am going to put the car back on the road, but a fancy a more upto date engine i.e zetec or cosworth need to sell this engine to fund it i would keep the twin cam if i were you. its already hooked up to the car and they are a good engine and rather saught after. plus cossies and zetecs are common (awaits arguments)

NELLYSMK2 Posted August 19, 2006 Author Report Posted August 19, 2006 nah mate common as muck they are, i'll give ya twice its worth at 50 quid yeah good one mate ha ha
Posse Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 i would of thought its worth about around £800 ish
Pipster007 Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 It's worthless. Everyone knows Lotus are useless engines, always breaking down, expensive to repair, hard to get parts for..........................I'll give you £20 scrap value
RFChris Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 Ask Twink, he'll give you a pack of Marlboros and a lesson in lurrrrrrve. I, on the other hand, will give you £21....(in your face, Pip!) Chris
tim Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 depends on the state of the engine they regulaly goin for around 1k on ebay
Twinkle Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 they always fetch good money if its a runner but requires a rebuild its gonna be worth £1000 minimum, a recent one went on ebay that was the same spec as mine a big valve sprint spec for £3700ish and it was stripped for inspection so still needed to be put together. heads alone often reach £1000. has it got the L on the block or is it a converted crossflow lump with the spacer fitted in between the block and head on the front case? i would personally keep it as they are fairly rare, and sound the nuts!! mine has been rebuilt by v6col on the site and its great fun, dont worry if it leaks a little oil they all tend to do that but check the water pump as these go regularly if the fan belt is over tensioned and its an engine out, head and sump off to rebuild as its pressed into the front cover. hope this helps m8
allsteel Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 Be different,Keep that engine in your escort. Im building one for my anglia.Hope to have some pics soon.

I think I have established that it is worth some good money, but I have decided to keep it in the car now following a lot advice from everyone, and being that it is a lot rarer then a lot of other engines out there. Going to start stripping the car down soon for a full restoration, will post pics very soon.
Twinkle Posted August 21, 2006 Report Posted August 21, 2006 good man its sounds like its a mk2 cortina lump which is apparantly stronger crrank i think, is the dipstick at the front or the back? should be painted in grey but mine is in ashton green as he redbuilt it earlier this year, he is a member on here v6col and he knows shed loads about the twink lumps and has built a fair few and we need pics now m8

NELLYSMK2 Posted October 21, 2006 Author Report Posted October 21, 2006 Hi sorry I took so long to get back to you; the dip stick is at the rear. The engine is out of the car know pending a full rebuild over the winter. Can’t believe I sore one of these engines sell on ebay for £3100???
Twinkle Posted October 21, 2006 Report Posted October 21, 2006 with the dipstick at the back it may be a proper escort one and not a cortina one, although many like mine have been swapped and the original stick tube at the front is used as a breather, £3100 is a very good price for someone i have seen them over the £4000-£4500 most of the time!!
NELLYSMK2 Posted October 22, 2006 Author Report Posted October 22, 2006 When I brought the car, the chap that owned it said that he took the engine out of a smashed up mk1 twincam back in the 70’s. At the time I took this with a pinch of salt! But it dose seem to be the genuine article. The dipstick hole at the front that you are referring to is there; but it looks like it has a factory steel bung in it. And one other thing it has a big wing sump?
