4parajon Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 Anyone got any piccies please as I have one but I'm wondering what sort of connection they would have had for the exhaust as the one I have just ends at the end of the primaries
Dalek Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 Your gonna have to get something made up m8. The mass manifold was designed to exit through the bulkhead into the car.

How does that work then???? You would gas yourself Any piccies, even old ones so i can at least compare with what I've got

Not sure about that, my brother had one and his wasnt designed like that nor was my cousins mass manifold but i could be wrong. I havnt got any pics but i do know that Jamie with the burgandy anglia has got one, perhaps you can take a look at his at the next meet.
Jeff HPE Motorsport Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 Your gonna have to get something made up m8. The mass manifold was designed to exit through the bulkhead into the car. The Mass system that went through the bulkhead, was made for competition cars ie, National Hot Rods etc, cos they were so low to the ground, for better handling, i think you get the gist. It was then connected to a silencer & then out through the floor or rear quarter... Jeff Harris..
105Speed Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 I think people are getting confused here between a Mass Manifold and a Mass Style Manifold and anything that looks like a big bunch of bananas these days is getting called a 'Mass Manifold'. But that style of big pipes with the number one sweeping right over the top was done by a few people including Specialised Exhausts... in fact we do one, which is on Webbys Anglia. But if you have the 4 separate primary's you need to pop over and see someone like Simpson and get them to make you a collector that the 4 pipes will slot into. They were like that ont he hotrods (Anglias, Escorts, Starlets etc) to stop them cracking at high revs, which was a problem Gordon Streeter had when he fitted one of ours to his race car, but now its all mounted up with support and its been re-welded its ok...
James HPE Motorsport Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 Mine is a proper Mass manifold and that exits out of the bottom just like any other normal manifold! See my garage for a pic of my engine bay
Retromotorsport Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 Is it a Mass ????? No... but its looks like one, cept they dont make them for Zetecs
Dalek Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 No Gary That's one you made for Dave Whites car. It's in the style of a MASS manifold though, looks nice This is an origional MASS manifold. Don't know if this one is standard or has been modified to go under the car like a normal exhaust. This is the prototype 105speed MASS Stle manifold as fitted to my engine... HTH Craig
James HPE Motorsport Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 Is it a Mass ????? No... but its looks like one, cept they dont make them for Zetecs no its not a mass manifold and imo it doesnt look like one. The telltale signs on most of the recent copies is that each primary is not one piece whereas the mass ones were!
FlashCadillac Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 and what do they do then... apart from take a lot of room up??
105Speed Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 Get rid of gas very quickly. Which when you've got a pair of 50's pumpin fuel in at 7500rpm you need to get rid of it darn quick too
105Speed Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 Is it a Mass ????? No... but its looks like one, cept they dont make them for Zetecs Looks lovely Gary... But number one pipe looks like it will clout the water rail ? Do you have any pics of it on an engine ?
Retromotorsport Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 did no one read what was under the pic .. ... no, but it looks like one Neil , it is for DW's old race Zetec.. which had room behind the engine to use the original water take off and houseing think that engine and manifold are in a Lotus Europa now

The telltale signs on most of the recent copies is that each primary is not one piece whereas the mass ones were! I'm pretty sure that the mass ones were made in the traditional method, buy cutting the section of the correct angle from a 180 degree bend As i'm sure it would be impossible for a mandrel bender to form those shapes.. perhaps Jon can confirm this as he is the sites resident bende... ermm tube forming specialist
4parajon Posted July 17, 2007 Author Report Posted July 17, 2007 As i'm sure it would be impossible for a mandrel bender to form those shapes.. perhaps Jon can confirm this as he is the sites resident bende... ermm tube forming specialist Going off the one I have in my possession which I have been informed is a Mass manifold (incidentally the one I have has been mandrel bent and are in one piece) I can't see why anyone would need to join it, having said that, it's all down to the tooling which is very expensive for mandrel bending, it just so happens that I have the correct tooling to make these bends in one piece.
105Speed Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Thats interesting.. I had a set of pipes bent up from one of our patterns by a guy who does F1 work and he managed to loose a couple of joins but there was still a couple in there. If you look at how the 'copies' are made they are made using Dairy Bends to ensure perfect radius's without any wasting. Bend up a couple of tubes parajon and lets see, I could be looking for a new supplier in the near future perhaps we could do some business...

Thats what i was getting at Jon, most race fab shops dont have access to the machines, and a few that i have modded for different installs have looked like they where done in one piece but upon cutting through them they were infact joined sections, but these ones did have a lot of weathering on them. making the outside a uniform rusty pitted surface. I also saw one on a dyno.. looked one piece till it started to go cherry red
