Poo. I have a problem, i gets me engine in and i find out that the cam belt tensioner pulley thread is knackered. Its been taken out to a larger size and some wierd threaded stud put in where it should be M10. So, i need to put a helicoil insert in there to get the thread back to M10 but i have never done it before, the engine is in the car and i just wont be confident enough to give it a go myself. Obviously you have to drill exactly 90° into the head and thats whats worrying me.

So, is there anyone on the East Coast that can help me?? None of the mobile mechanics will touch it?!

Just thought i'd try me luck on here :D

If theres a stud in there can't you get it out then the drill will just follow the line of the hole. Is the drill size for the M10 coil bigger than the stud you've got cos i'f not you can't do it anyhe and if your really lucky the coil will fit the thread the studs in.

Would it be a really big issue to get the head off if it ment that it was done properly? Obv its a pain in the arse but not as much as if it gets messed up by taking a bit of a short cut, Been there done that still kick myself every time i do it :(

I'm not sure what size the hole is but i dont think it's too big (i havent got a helicoil kit to check) but i'd imagine the helicoil will sit in a 12mm hole??

I REALLY dont want to take the head off cos it'll be a pain in the arse man.

I just thought i'd try my luck really?? But if the head needs to come off then so be it. :(

The 10mm helicoil would not fit in a 12mm hole, the hole for the helicoil tap woud be too big, from memory the helicoil tapping size is about 10.3mm

Poo. I could be wrong, 12 mill is probably a bit of an exaggeration :?

I'll borrow some verniers from work.

Cheers guys for your help.

As allready said mate 12mm hole would be to big for an m10 helicoil, but you could probably use a time sert kit.Same sort of thing except it uses a solid thread insert rather than the spring type thing helicoils use.Not sure where you would get one i know wurth are the uk importers hope this helps

sam can you just re-tap the thread to a metric size and get a stud turned up say with a 12mm thread to go in the head then a 10mm shank and thread for the tentioner to sit on?. meaning a stepped stud. pm me your number again so i can send you a picture of a example of what i mean

I always think time sert n helicoils are the same sort of thing then remember there not, we use timeserts at work n there all good done brake calipers with them n everything. Try RS or even ebay thay won't be too hard to get hold of but thay are quite expensive kits if i remember :(
