sambo Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 What do you guys reckon is a cheap solution to getting a car through the MOT that has a hydrolic handbrake? 1) tell the tester and hope he will overlook it? 2) DONT tell the tester and hope he wont notice it 3) fit a single calliper on one of the discs 4) none of the above ??? What solutions are there?? Cheers.
kev16v Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 it must have its own feed to the handbrake so that if ur foot brake gives up.u have ur handbrake to full back on ie duel system two brake pots one for foot, one for handbrake
toad650 Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 I've got this same prob but i get on well with the MOTer so hopefully it'll be ok. I was thinking of just putting in some cables that don't do anything, how are they to know?? You wouldn't be able to fit just one caliper as the handbrake has to work on both sides, unless you've got an LSD i guess but i don't think that comes into the MOT regs.
toad650 Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 I've got a funny feeling that the handbrake is going to be the least of my probs though Let me know how it goes if yours is soon so i can work it out too.
bortaf Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 Any decent tester will/should check the mechanical operation of the cable by getting somone to pull on the H/B while checking underneath so fake cabeling wont really work. The only thing you can do is find a crap tester who wont notice taken from some techy MOT stuff on the web "Hydraulic Parking Brakes Hydraulic parking brakes as a sole means of operation are not acceptable on vehicles first used on or after 1 January 1968. However, they may be used to assist the application or release of a mechanical brake."
Mrp Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 use rear calipers from a car that uses a cable. Or leave standard handbrake with cables and get a funky upright hyd fun handle mounted off the side of the tunnel up front. Dont buy one they are easy to make if you think about it......
tazrocks88 Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 talk 2 the tester before u spend any money my tester said as long as it stops the car he is happy to pass it

Guest MK1gaz Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 I'm sure you need a cable operated handbrake for an mot but i'll ask him tommorrow for you . They do check that the handbrake mechanism moves and stops the wheels , that i know for sure
