Went down to my MOT station today Sarahs nows him quite well, to book the escort in cos its coming soon and to check a couple of things in case I had to change some stuff. Pulled in and walked in his word, "Oh dear that sounds a bit loud" so im like great! He says he will check it out starts the car and gives it some  opens the bonnet and says okay cos of the engine its borderline I will allow it, thank god! Hope he doesnt change his mined, if anything it will be quiter after the sanspeed session. The good things where the battery is okay were it is in the back and i only have to get a 3.5 on emissions compared to a normal car having to get 0.2!!!!!

Mine got a full ticket on it the other day I was over the moon.

When I asked about emmisions he said its a old car so a visual inspection is all it needs, Noise wise I didnt think it would be tested for that.

Mines a 72 Escort if that makes any diffrence.

Being a historic car, I guess it is? I beleive im right in saying that there is just a visual check on the amount of blue smoke coming from the car during MOT time.

Correct me if im wrong people!

Thanks

4.5% CO from '75ish till '86ish, then 3.5% CO till about '92. EVEN BETTER

there is deffo a max sound level. i think basically as long as your not blowing old granny's over with the shockwave from your x-horst then your mot tester should say its ok

found this on the vosa website

Exhaust system

The exhaust system will fail the MOT if:

Part of the system missing or excessively deteriorated

A mounting is missing or damaged so it does not support the system

There is a major leak

The system is excessively noisy.

Emissions

These are checked using specialised equipment, the details of the check depending on the year that the vehicle was first used on the road. Excessive smoking (checked visually) is a reason for failure.

Diesel smoke emissions are checked by using a smoke meter.

Unless they have an 'A' weighted db meter, the noise level is not checkable :D

Erven if they had, you need to do the test outside (on private property) and at a set distance. A lot of bother fo them I'd say ;)

at the testers discretion mate, some will pass some won't

Emissions 4.5% up to sept '74 (i think) and then 3.5% from then on :D
