Noodles Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 Went down to my MOT station today Sarahs nows him quite well, to book the escort in cos its coming soon and to check a couple of things in case I had to change some stuff. Pulled in and walked in his word, "Oh dear that sounds a bit loud" so im like great! He says he will check it out starts the car and gives it some opens the bonnet and says okay cos of the engine its borderline I will allow it, thank god! Hope he doesnt change his mined, if anything it will be quiter after the sanspeed session. The good things where the battery is okay were it is in the back and i only have to get a 3.5 on emissions compared to a normal car having to get 0.2!!!!!
Mr Sam Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 how comes you get emissions allowance is it age related or engine spec related? good luck when it comes up
Super_Shaun Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 Mine got a full ticket on it the other day I was over the moon. When I asked about emmisions he said its a old car so a visual inspection is all it needs, Noise wise I didnt think it would be tested for that. Mines a 72 Escort if that makes any diffrence.
Noodles Posted August 25, 2007 Author Report Posted August 25, 2007 Emissions is age related gonna get sanspeed to check but the MOT tester sad I should meet it easy
bomber1 Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 ith emissions its a vissuale check to 75ish then after that its 3.5% when i took the my 73 they didnt put a pipe up its arse cos it was to old
GJUK Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 Mines a 72 Escort if that makes any diffrence. Being a historic car, I guess it is? I beleive im right in saying that there is just a visual check on the amount of blue smoke coming from the car during MOT time. Correct me if im wrong people! Thanks Jon

bomber1 Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 nice one emu thought i had right but obvosly not
Mr Sam Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 cool so anglebox will escape it alltogether?
GJUK Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 cool so anglebox will escape it alltogether? Its the same as any historic car i think - smokes alot and it fails. Jon
over_head_cam Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 . . . . ."Oh dear that sounds a bit loud" TBH I didn't think there was anything in the VOSA manual about noise levels.
baz105e Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 there is deffo a max sound level. i think basically as long as your not blowing old granny's over with the shockwave from your x-horst then your mot tester should say its ok found this on the vosa website Exhaust system The exhaust system will fail the MOT if: Part of the system missing or excessively deteriorated A mounting is missing or damaged so it does not support the system There is a major leak The system is excessively noisy. Emissions These are checked using specialised equipment, the details of the check depending on the year that the vehicle was first used on the road. Excessive smoking (checked visually) is a reason for failure. Diesel smoke emissions are checked by using a smoke meter.
over_head_cam Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 Unless they have an 'A' weighted db meter, the noise level is not checkable Erven if they had, you need to do the test outside (on private property) and at a set distance. A lot of bother fo them I'd say
Tom Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 at the testers discretion mate, some will pass some won't Emissions 4.5% up to sept '74 (i think) and then 3.5% from then on
allanmex Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 emissions is visual check up to 75, 4.5% from 75 to 86, 3.5% after 86. ive never failed an exhaust on being too noisey
mossy Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 when i took my 79' mk2 for an mot...all it got was a visual check.. to which it promptly failed!
