slimrs Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 just put a cossie into the capri and have been out testing it up and around the close. although it was alot of fun i did notice a fair amount of smoke coming from the exhaust, this gets alot worse when the revs rise above 2k. on closer inspection the manifold is covered in oil and so is the intercooler . im assuming that i need a new turbo lol. is there anywhere that does recon turbos on an exchange basis or is it cheaper to have a look on ebay? is it somthing i could of done in less than 5 miles driving it, or plumbing in somthing wrong or was i sold a dead turbo?
Guest MK1gaz Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 It could be the turbo or it could be the pistons in the engine . Disconnect and blank off the oil pipe to the turbo and see if it still smokes once all the existing oil has burned up from the inlet system . Don't leave the turbo spinning without oil for too long though as it will then be foooooked so do it at idle first . You could just do a compression test on the engine as well
Supercharged Nat Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 bit risky running a turbo without any oil even for a very short time! they rely on the oil pressure to stop friction (the bearings are fluid dynamic type) with out oil they run on metal= bad!
dragaddict Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 watch out m8 if you're going to that turbo without oil. check the retern of oil of the turbo that is connected to the sump, the oil has retern to the sump;if not the turbo ,intercooler and all the induction componentes will all filled with oil

Ive got a spare turbo, its pretty fat, its off a jeep though...
dragaddict Posted October 10, 2007 Report Posted October 10, 2007 if you take out the air cleaner see the shaft of the turbo if it has to much clearance and if the impeller hits the housing,if the impeller hits the housing you can say that it is bye bye
Pipster007 Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 I had these rebuld my turbo, and they are local to you http://www.turbotechnics.com/docs/index.htm
