johnny_h Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 ....is this bad? http://www.oldskoolford.co.uk/phpBB2/vi ... 084#627084
johnny_h Posted November 1, 2007 Author Report Posted November 1, 2007 dont look to bad ...compaired to mine Are the liners normally all scratched like that then mate?
ASBO CAPRI Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 Im no expert but that looks like damage caused by detonation because of the speckles of metal around the combustion chamber on the head probably bits of spark plug and piston metal. Det would also cause the piston to wobble in the cylinder and pinch a ring. What do the plugs look like are they silvery in colour and speckled or pited?
Toby Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 Looks like detting to me too. Its one of a few problems though I recon. 1/ Det made the pistons too hot and expanded into the bores. 2/ Rings got too hot too and I wouldn't mind betting the ends touched and a few are broken 3/ Det was possibly caused by a/ plugs too hot (wrong grade) b/ mixture wrong c/ too much advance d/ a compination of the above 4/ Lack of clearance between valves and pistons for reasons mentioned in other posts. If its got an A8 in it I doubt it has too much compression in it so the det was probably not caused by that. Some measuring needs to happen before putting it all back together to check for adequate clearances. Putty between valves and pistons and turn the engine over gently by hand durring a dummy build. You want AT LEAST 1.5mm of clearance. Match your valve springs to your cam. Don't cry - you have the technology to rebuild it!! An A8 seems well wild! What do you use it for?
johnny_h Posted November 2, 2007 Author Report Posted November 2, 2007 Cheers toby. I use it for shopping, going sideways and scaring old people.
w p e Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 as toby says. also can see that the exhaust valves been hitting the piston prob due to cam timing advance. did you clean the bore/honing type marks as thats not very good. also looks very lean. was the inlet gasket ok or any air leaks?
johnny_h Posted November 2, 2007 Author Report Posted November 2, 2007 I haven't cleaned anything. This is exactly how it looked when I took the head off. The inlet gasket (the rubber one stuck to the side of the head) was sound. I'm itching to get the cam and piston's out now!
Col-ashtonmobile Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 yep , all down to a complete strip down & inspection m8, then examine everything one at a time properly , only way to go
johnny_h Posted November 2, 2007 Author Report Posted November 2, 2007 Cheers guys, I'm striiping it as we speak. I just hope I get round to rebuilding it!
w p e Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Cheers guys, I'm striiping it as we speak. I just hope I get round to rebuilding it!thats the easy bit
allsteel Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Looks like a sh*t honing job to me. Exhaust valve contacting piston.Need valve pocket deepened. Total strip down, assess damage to cam and valve gear, pistons, rods bearings etc. Get someone who knows what there doing to rebuild it!!!
Toby Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Cheers toby. I use it for shopping, going sideways and scaring old people. An A8 for shopping!! I gotta go on a shopping trip with you!!
oliwally Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 No but they do an A8+ looks like its got a little bit more lift then you can go 254,262,264,272 for lairy cams and then 658,1FR4,1FR1 and 700 for full on race cams, but you'll need a head to match and up the compression to make everything work, you'll need at least 12:1 to get best from it all now that would be a fun shopping trip,i call shot gun for passenger seat on way back
w p e Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 why A8 it wont work till 5000rpm seems a bit much for a shopping car ive got 5 A8 cams on the shelf that have come out as not very good for road use spose each to there own but remember big aint always best. ask fiesta steve
johnny_h Posted November 3, 2007 Author Report Posted November 3, 2007 I was told it was an A8, I have just removed it and it's actually an A2.
w p e Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 going the other way now but thats more of a shopping cam BUT valve contact with an A2 not good
