PaulAshman Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Sorry if seems a stupid question but the engine in my 1980 estate mk2 is a 1300, is it a crossflow or a kent? Sorry for silly question
bmxdave Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Its a kent engine. The crossflow refers to the head. A Pre-crossflow shares the same block and internals (although generally of smaller capacity) but the inlet and exhaust are on the same side. On the Nearside or as you look at it the right. The crossflow has the inlet on the opposite side therefore creating a crossflow head. The Lotus Engine was also based on a Kent Block but using a twincam head.
PaulAshman Posted November 2, 2007 Author Report Posted November 2, 2007 So excuse my complete ignorance would mine be pre crossflow or normal crossflow. I would go and look but i am led up from my recent operation a T THE MOMENT. cHEERS
Smudger105e Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Precross, carb and exhaust on same side, cross flow they are on opposite sides. All Escorts are crossflow (I think!!) Here's my Anglia Pre crossflow engine, 997cc
V8ian Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 or you can get even more confusing when you get to late model X Flows in Kas and Fiestas, they are Valencias. But Kent covers a lot of engines, ranging from the very early 3 bearing crank in997 107e and and the clasic at 1340cc,and of course the venerable Anglia at 997? and 1200cc then it comes back in the Cortina with the 1200 and 1500 with the 5 bearing block, then into the Mk2 cortina comes with 1200, 1300 and 1500 pre X flows, soon to be changed to 1300 & 1600 X flows. The Mk2 cortina was the first Ford to have the X flow head fitted, Next was the Mk1 escort with the 840, 1100, 1300, and 1600 kents, and of course there are the 950, 1100 1300 and 1600 kents in the Fiestas which again are different blocks to the in-line engines, confused yet, and if you want to delve into the Tanus cars of europe, it gets really confusing. they even had a FWD 12m in the 60s Ian
PaulAshman Posted November 2, 2007 Author Report Posted November 2, 2007 Okay, i've got it.....................i think! I will check tomorrow but i think my carb n exhaaust are opposite sides so crossflow. Cheers guys.

PaulAshman Posted November 2, 2007 Author Report Posted November 2, 2007 Good stuff chaps, crossflow it is then. Does anyone or has anyone ever modified a 1300 crossflow before like fast cam, twin webers, tasty sounding exhaust etc etc. Cheers, Paul.

Col-ashtonmobile Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 yeah m8 raced up & tuned a few 1300s easy as pie with the right bits
PaulAshman Posted November 3, 2007 Author Report Posted November 3, 2007 Right 1300 tuned it is going to be then. Can anyone recomend the first few bits I should be investing in to start with. This is a really new game for me so any advice would be great.
PaulAshman Posted November 3, 2007 Author Report Posted November 3, 2007 I did anticipate it may cost a few quid but I plan this over a period of time
Toby Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Nothing wrong with tuning a 1300 - sweet, revy 1300 - quite like the idea. But...be clear what you're after. Swapping for a 1600 now - build it up with your car still on the road, will give you more HP per pound in the future. Ain't no subsitute for cubes (cc's) is what the yanks say! (but they are fat!) It's your baby! Either way, for a nice fast road engine you need a good head, 1300 pistons to raise the compression and a 234 / 244 cam IMAO. (A 244 will be more lairy in a 1300 than a 1600 (read less driveable))
