bmxdave Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 Has anyone on here got them? How did you set it all up? Got mine last week and instantly bought Colin Mcrae Dirt, Halo 3 and Forza 2. Now im after some online action and i was wondering how everyone set theirs up? My modem doesnt plug into the ethernet port because its BT, and its USB. I tried plugging the ethernet cable into the PC in the hope something would happen but it said it was connected but wouldnt get an ip address. I dont really fancy paying out a shitload on wireless routers and adaptors for the PC AND the xbox so what should i do?
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 I got one last week too Firstly, you can link it directly to your PC, but you need an ethernet crossover cable. This looks the same as a standard cat 5 ethernet cable, but a couple of wires are crossed over in one of the plugs. (The cable that came with your Xbox ISN'T a crossover cable, you will have to buy one.) You also have to have internet sharing enabled on your PC. To do this on XP you need to run the Network Setup Wizard. You then set up your Xbox. Let me know what happens here, because when you enable internet connection sharing, your PC will have an automatic IP address, and I am not sure if the Xbox will work with this. If it doesn't, you will have to give your PC and Xbox their own IP addresses. The other way is to use a wired router. These are cheaper than a wired/wireless router and is the best way if you have a small network. This is how mine is setup as I have quite a few computers on my network and I have given everything it's own IP address. Finally, if you go the wired router way, you will need a standard Cat 5 ehernet cable for the PC and the Xbox, you can't use Crossover cables. The cheaper way is the first option, but PM me or reply on here if you need to configure IP addresses on both machines

beedz Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 dirt rocks lancia delta s4 i found the router option the easiest for setup, once the router is setup you can plug the xbox in with no issues
bmxdave Posted November 19, 2007 Author Report Posted November 19, 2007 Its going to cost between £105 and £140 to go wireless. £70 for a router and adaptor, but my bro will go halfes on that as he wants wireless on his laptop, plus the £70 it costs for the xbox adaptor. I think setting up IP addresses and that is too much messing about really, for me anyway. Im lazy so i like plug n play stuff. I dont really wanna buy the crossover cable if im not sure itll work either.
beedz Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 what's the xbox adaptor bit? i've got a standard (free from aol) wireless router - and the xbox plugs straight into that using the cable that came with it
Nettles Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 Mrs Nettles brought me an Xbox 360 last Christmas. I really want to go online with it but being a complete gimp I haven’t got a clue on how to set it up. I’ve just read this thread and I’m still none the wiser! However I do have a cunning plan...................................................Jimbob please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please HELP ME SET IT UP!
MK5 Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 i have a home network currently running 3 pc's and 2 xbox's. i have a wired modem (was NTL, now Virgin). plugged into that is a 4 port wireless router. one of the ports runs of to sam's bedroom where there is another router plugged in that has Sam's Vista pc and his Xbox plugged in. in the lounge we have 2 pc's and the other xbox plugged in to the first router. The Vista pc found the network on its own. the 2 XP pc's in the lounge found the network using the network wizard. the lounge xbox has been on the network for a year and to be honest i can't remember how we set it up. the bedroom xbox was simply plugged straight in and it found the network on its own. all you have to set up is your Windows Live id, and that is done following the simple instructions on the Xbox.

bmxdave Posted November 24, 2007 Author Report Posted November 24, 2007 Its all a bit expensive though, i mean, its money i could be spending on big engines and such.
johnboy Posted November 24, 2007 Report Posted November 24, 2007 Cheapest way is to use the ethernet cable that comes with the xbox (or get a nice long one to reach your pc) and a usb adaptor like this:. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-TO-LAN-NETWOR ... dZViewItem I used one on my xbox360 before I got a router and they work really well. £6.00. Cheap enough?!
