redrocket Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 Hi there, long time lurker and this is my first post.. I got into trouble on another forum for copying an image from this site, this pic: Just wondering what the copyright is on the image, and is it possible to have permission to use it? Thanks.[/img]
ZetecVan 2.0 Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 You mean the 'this thread is worthless' smilies? As far as I'm concerned, it's a graphic that comes with the phpbb forum and can be used anywhere. Did you get into trouble for using it, or 'hotlinking' the picture from another forum, and that forum didn't like you doing it?
tim Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 the was created by a member of the saxo sports club forum many years ago and i got it added on to old skool ford afew years ago

redrocket Posted November 20, 2007 Author Report Posted November 20, 2007 They didnt like me hotlinking from this site, as it is wrong to do so without getting permission, and they are right about that. So now I'm asking for permission and about the copyright of the image
ZetecVan 2.0 Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 That's good of them to mention it to you. We have unlimited bandwidth so at the moment it's ok for you to hotlink from OSF. If that changes, we will turn off hotlinking so you (or anyone) won't be able to do it. Thanks for asking. Mike
redrocket Posted November 20, 2007 Author Report Posted November 20, 2007 Mike, Thanks a million, Ill know when the hotlinking has been disabled and ill come back asking to copy the image or something. Good reason not to hotlink: Edit cant post links until i have 10 post, but google for hacking-john-mccain Thanks again
over_head_cam Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 wats hotlinking? Pasting a link up for an image on another site All our pics are normally hotlinked from photobucket etc. If this wasn't available we'd all have to load our pics onto the OSF site and link from the gallery.
redrocket Posted November 20, 2007 Author Report Posted November 20, 2007 google: wiki hotlink Basically stealing other people's images and bandwidth without giving them any credit. It frowned down upon in interwebland.

I have hotlinking turned off on my business site after I had some cheeky doris who wasn't even a customer advertising the products on her site and hotlinking the images from mine. She was probably buying the same products from a rival who didn't have good pictures.

I've seen similar things happen, but none so funny... http://mike.newsvine.com/_news/2007/03/ ... ohn-mccain
redrocket Posted November 20, 2007 Author Report Posted November 20, 2007 you can protect it, it's just not normally needed, or some sysadmins might not know it is available. In a ht-tp (stupid forum spam killer) get request there is some information passed back to the webserver called referring domain. So if I hotlink on everyfordireland to oldskoolford's image, the referer is detected as everyfordireland, and the webserver can detect the image is being hotlinked from another site. You can configure the webserver what to do after that... Send proper image (default) Send nothing, Send 404, Send porn
