Admin Mk2Jo Posted November 23, 2007 Admin Report Posted November 23, 2007 I have received this e-mail this morning from U-Switch (I switch gas/elec supplier with them and so am on their database). Doesn't take them long does it to jump on the bandwagon : Dear Jo, The latest bungle by government bureaucrats has potentially exposed millions of people’s personal data to fraudsters. To help uSwitch customers who may have been affected, we’ve partnered with Equifax, one of the UK’s leading credit reference agencies. They can help you identify quickly and easily if someone has applied for credit using your identity for just £3.99 per month. Fraud protection for just £3.99 a month Equifax Identity Watch™ will check your credit report for suspicious activity and then alert you by text and email if they find anything. Pipster007 Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 I'd say it may be easier for peeps just to go to the bank and get them to change their bank account for a new one. That's the easiest way of having money removed from your account, that I can see Unfortunately I don't know if new NI numbers will be issued or how to change your name and address or any of the other probs that have been exposed due to the debarcle
Twinkle Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 as far as i know pip you cant change your ni number
Pipster007 Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 as far as i know pip you cant change your ni number I'm sure the government can, seeing as they fooked up, is what I meant

Pipster007 Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 as far as i know pip you cant change your ni number I'm sure the government can, seeing as they fooked up, is what I meant you know what the goverment is like though m8 its not their money thats gonna be taken its the publics They can always give us those NI numbers that they are giving to all the ill eagles that are entering the country
Admin Mk2Jo Posted November 23, 2007 Author Admin Report Posted November 23, 2007 To be honest, it's not the bank account details that worry me most it's the potential for identity fraud using my children's details Even if it's not done now, it could still be done in 10 years time when my boys are adults .... it's the sort of information that could be sold on. So, you don't just need to worry about it now, they could be looking over their shoulders as it were for the rest of their lives .
Twinkle Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 thats the problem jo, 10 years or more down the line how could you prove it was down to a government fook up to get it sorted! i bet they dont even know who's details are missing to be able to give warnings to those that need them and also new ni numbers etc to prevent it
Pipster007 Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 How much is that costing to tell us something we already know. That money could be used to plug some of the holes that have been left open in this mess
Twinkle Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 I heard on the news this morning that they are sending out 7 million letters today saying sorry, but what use is that to anybody depends how big the compensation cheque in them is gonna be
bortaf Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 I heard on the news this morning that they are sending out 7 million letters today saying sorry, but what use is that to anybody well it's another fekking waist of money aint it, you know these labour twats love to give it away then they can charge us for it to make em feel better (where's the Apple Pies emocticon?) ?
Pipster007 Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 (where's the winkers emocticon?) ?
ZetecVan 2.0 Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 And what a load of the round ones when they said they sent the whole database instead of just the name and NI number, it was a cost cutting exercise and would have been to expensive to extract those two fields. No, it's just lazyness. It's a doddle to extract two columns out of a whole database. And what are they doing outsourcing sensitive information anyway?
mk2_escort_chick Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 I'm a lil confuesed about the whole situation. Is it everyone who is receiving family allowance now or does it also include people who were receiving it up until a few months/year ago? If it includes a few months ago (sep) then we're one of the people too. This country is a fooking joke!!!
jimbo Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 On the subject of credit checks, you can get them, at any time from equifax and experian for the princely sum of £2 each, or you can even fiddle the system to get 'em for free http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/credit-rating-credit-score#dknow Well worth a check, especially before going for a mortgage, or a big loan. In fact the whole site is well worth a look.
jimbo Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 Speaking of the HMRC info leaks. It just made my job a lot easier. I spend my days trying to convince NHS top bods of the perils of data going where it shouldn't. It's amazing how much more attention they've paid in the last two days
