So i broke down this morning. It's been mis-firing for ages after a long stint on a fast road when the throttle's been open for a while. I checked everything, but couldn't work out what it was having just put new points on, HT leads, and a set of plugs for the winter. Anyway i twiddled some stuff and was pretty sure it would start but the battery was dead. So a friendly AA man came and sorted me out and he mentionned that the carb may have frozen, and it wasn't breathing well. Has anyone heard of this before?

Anyway he clipped the power pack on and away we went.

However, I once again had to battle with the residents of Oxshott who don't seem to understand that a car CAN break down even if it's on private property and funnily enough, no i can't move it......cos it's BROKEN DOWN!

So This doris drives past me and points out how inconvenient it is of me to break down in her driveway, and how it's very dangerous and they have had fatalities there recently, to which i thought "yes, and i can see another one on the horizon!" Did she honestly think i'd thought, "Oh it's a bloddy freezing morning, i'm early for work, i know, i'll have myself a nice little breakdown!!!! This looks like a posh driveway, I'll break down here!"

Anyway, I said to the doris who was sat in some sort of chelsea tractor, "i think it will start i just need a BATTERY (Hint, hint)" Hoping she would help me out. But know, instead she replied

" Oh. Well. This is an automatic you won't be able to get it off this!"

To which i laughed in her face and she drove off!!!!!

What's under the bonnet then, a big battery shaped hole with a little hamster in wheel rigged up to a generator!

Fookin' tossers! I have had similar experiences although not where I live. The Anglia stopped working this time last year, luckily in my road, but instead of "Can you get that thing away from my house", I had a neighbour (from the house it stopped outside) come out and asked if he can help and did I want a cup of tea :D I don't really know him that well, but it was nice of him to ask. There are some down to earth human beings about, but they are getting few and far between :(

Oh and yes, carbs do freeze up sometimes, I have had the problem before but that was because I had a K&N filter fitted. One thing you can try is get some ducting (the Aluminium bendy stuff), mount it near the exhaust manifold, then mount the other end near the air filter.

*edit* Some people have very short memorys mate. Breaking down was all part of the fun years ago, but all these people with new motors get them serviced by the main dealer, don't have a clue how the engine works, and they are alot more reliable these days. It costs nothing (apart from 5 mins) to stop and ask if your fellow human being is in need of help. So much for that twats Christmas spirit :evil:

Sorry to hear of your probs folks but dont be too hard on the populace of good old blighty. I run my own breakdown and recovery business and in the past used to stop and offer help (free) to people I came across stranded. Some were grateful but the abuse and blatant taking advantage I recieved from others led me to be the cautious person I am today. A point also to mention is that careless use of jump leads on a modern motor can do untold (expensive) damage to the electrical system, so those in osf's dont be surprised not to get a jump from and ecu controlledmodern whizzmobile!

She only lived round the corner so being the kind lads we are we pushed her home.
