RicardoR Posted December 19, 2007 Report Posted December 19, 2007 Next year I'm going to be 17 and am looking for insurance for a 1.6L Capri MK3. Does anyone know if I have to have insurance at 17 when I get a Provisional License?
Stu_B Posted December 19, 2007 Report Posted December 19, 2007 Not sure if you can have a policy in your own name, but you can deffo be added to someone elses as I have just added my missus to mine & take her out on the 'L' plates
RicardoR Posted December 19, 2007 Author Report Posted December 19, 2007 Well the whole plan (even when I'm 18 or 19 or whatever) was to insure my dad as the main driver and me as a second, that way the insurance is only 600 pounds rather than a grand.
mk1markfalkirk Posted December 19, 2007 Report Posted December 19, 2007 i was trying to insure my 2.0 with my provisional but looks like its not gona happen whereyou getting quoted 600 from i got 800 from tesco under my dad but his no claims just went down the sh1tter so looks like im in bother
Chris! Posted December 19, 2007 Report Posted December 19, 2007 i had my own policy when i had a provisional
Admin Vista Posted December 19, 2007 Admin Report Posted December 19, 2007 Well the whole plan (even when I'm 18 or 19 or whatever) was to insure my dad as the main driver and me as a second, that way the insurance is only 600 pounds rather than a grand. That is lots of peoples grand plan to save money, but watch out as the insurance companies aren't fools. The questions they ask are designed to catch you out. 1. They ask who is the main driver and you say your father 2. Then they ask if there are any other cars in the household, I suspect you will say yes as I bet your dad has his own car. Now they will either load up your policy because they suspect you are in fact the main driver, or worse you run the risk of them not paying out in the event of an accident when they investigate it and find you are the main driver. It may seem painful financially in the short term, but in the long run you're better off building up a no claims discount by having your own policy.
escamino Posted December 19, 2007 Report Posted December 19, 2007 Got my other half insurance on a provisional. It was cheaper for her to have the policy as she was offered a discount for new business.
tinamk1wales Posted December 19, 2007 Report Posted December 19, 2007 im 21 and only got my provisional license i was quoted £600 for mk1 fez 950!!! some insurers will ensure you but its cheaper if your a named driver im not sure how it works anymore get more quotes do some more researching good luck
ChristophStone Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 Well the whole plan (even when I'm 18 or 19 or whatever) was to insure my dad as the main driver and me as a second, that way the insurance is only 600 pounds rather than a grand. Can't even start to tell you how much of a bad idea that is. I work at an insurance company taking claims and every day I have young drivers on their parents insurance who think we won't investigate, and then cry when their car is written off and we won't pay out. Fronting is classed as fraud so we also send on info to the police. Insurance companies aren't stupid. The investigation work if we think you're fronting goes a lot deeper than asking the main user questions. If your dad has another car chances are they will either make you main user of the capri, or insure you then refuse to pay out.
