richie_stix Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 hi again osf fans! when the summer rolls around (if it rolls around in 08) i'm going to be doin a home resto on the old cappa but since its my first time, i need some advice! I have a 1.6 laser (now a 2ltr) with all the shitty graphics and plastic bits on it that i want shot of, to be replaced by a lovely smooth matt black finish. the most help i want is removing the super shitty rubbing strips and the graphic (thats growing mould and rust underneath! hope you guys can help! peace
DoireMan Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 If you mean the decals, normally you'd use a hair dryer to warm up the glue and peel them off.
richie_stix Posted January 2, 2008 Author Report Posted January 2, 2008 yeah mate i ment the decals, good advice... but what i really need to know is how the side strips are held on, cos i want it smooth like the 2.0s?
Copey Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 they have little bolts so leave small holes to fill over
Messenjah Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 self tapping screw front and rear and a series of small posts tht it locates along tht need grinding off and u will need to skim with filler m8 !
richie_stix Posted January 3, 2008 Author Report Posted January 3, 2008 the round ones, i though as much... sounds like a bit of work, of well, ive got all winter and spring to plan it so better get thinkin... thanks for the responses mr messenjah, what you drivin now if you aint drivin the batmobile no more?
Messenjah Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 another 2.0s atm m8 its for sale in the for sale section and im gonna get a bmw 318i lux touring insurance companies i hate them lol
Twinkle Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 if when the little posts are removed from taking off the trim, ideally, the holes should be welded up then linished flush and then skimmed with filler. otherwise, if just filled the filler may eventually vibrate and crack leaving holes or dimples along the side of the car
richie_stix Posted January 3, 2008 Author Report Posted January 3, 2008 are the bits that need grinding only on the door skin, cos i could get door skins off a 2ltr s or is it not worth the hassle? also anyone know how much roughly it might cost to get some matt black rattle cans made up at a local spray shop? fook halfords, they suck! also any one got any tips for covering the little holes on the rear quarters where the bumper bits 'plug in'? cheers
Messenjah Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 m8 i got spray cans thru my local paintshop they use them for underbody stuff or other black stuff ... they came to me at cost price coz i know the guy but tht was £1.50 a can to him ...
Twinkle Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 on the door skin and the rear quarter i beleive. you could just swap the hole door for a an s one. just buy premixed satin black from a motor factors no need to get it mixed. i used premixed simoniz for mine. the best bet for the bumper bracket holes would be to tack a plate on the inside of the panel ans seam sealer it and then a skim of filler on the outside
richie_stix Posted January 3, 2008 Author Report Posted January 3, 2008 oh twinkle, your cappa is that sweet black one! one of the cars that made me think satin/matt is the one for me, saw the pics of the before but never the after! looks sweet as fook mate, you do the same thing then of removing the rubbing stripps, grinding and filling? seems like a major mission but should be worth it!
Twinkle Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 that one was a 2.0s so didnt have the holes to deal with, made life a lot easier
