johnny_h Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 Can anyone help me time up my x-flow this weekend? It's indoors (warm and dry!) I'm off work at the moment and need to get the engine back in the car but am stuck with the timing. There will be beer tokens.
spitbarnatt Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 I would but I haven't got a clue, might be a case of the blind leading the blind.
johnny_h Posted February 2, 2008 Author Report Posted February 2, 2008 I would but I haven't got a clue, might be a case of the blind leading the blind. I know you would mate. It seems there aren't many people that actually know how to do it! I've been scouring the net for a guide. Burton catalogue has a cam timing guide which is great until it gets to the part where "further adjustments can be made using an adjustable cam pulley" Yeah I know that! What I don't know is how!
spitbarnatt Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 I might be completely wrong here but the vernier pulley is better left in it's central position then adjusted on a rolling road? I think you can just time the rest of the engine up normally.
johnny_h Posted February 2, 2008 Author Report Posted February 2, 2008 That would be great but the cam sprocket on the crossflow is under the timing chain cover at the bottom of the engine. It has a gasket etc so not as easy to get to as the pinto
spitbarnatt Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 Never worked on, or even looked closely at a x flow. Surely someone on here would know. Maybe pm toby?
davreeve Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 Its a shame you,re to far away as i could have helped you with that one ! Idealy you need a dial gauge and a timing disc to get it spot on.Also its not practical to adjust during a rolling road session as the timing chain cover has to be removed unlike a pinto which can be easily adjusted.Surely someone closer must be able to help.
johnny_h Posted February 2, 2008 Author Report Posted February 2, 2008 Someone has kindly offered to help but can't do anything until next weekend. I'm off work all next week and can't do anything and hate wasting the time. I need to get the engine in asap so I can get it to my mates where the wheel wells are gonna be welded up.
johnny_h Posted February 2, 2008 Author Report Posted February 2, 2008 just been given a copy of tuning kent crossflow by wallace and grommet to study! All I need now is a DTI and timing disc.
Wessie Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 i've got a DTI guage here, but your miles away surely you could download and print out a timing disc?
johnny_h Posted February 2, 2008 Author Report Posted February 2, 2008 surely you could download and print out a timing disc? I've read the book on timing and it seems simple enough and I understand what I have to do now. Rustypup said he's got a DTI gauge but I can't borrow it because he doesn't trust me. He will "operate" it for me though. You think I can download a timing disc? I know burtons do them and they look like a 360 protractor but are they a specific size? Could I print off this and cut it out?
Fiesta Steve Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 Yes m8, you should be able to print that off My offer still stands for next weekend if rustynuts can't help you out I undersatnd why you want it done sooner rather than later
Wessie Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 rustynuts that should be fien to use mr h
johnny_h Posted February 2, 2008 Author Report Posted February 2, 2008 Cheers Steve, I'll give it a go and then get back to you when my valves are bent.
johnny_h Posted February 3, 2008 Author Report Posted February 3, 2008 Trying to find out the point of full lift for my cam (a2) the burton catalogue says valve timing in/ex is 40/76/76/40. What does that mean?
johnny_h Posted February 3, 2008 Author Report Posted February 3, 2008 Quiet. You haven't even got an engine.
Toby Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 Hi mate, I'm happy to help too. Any chance you can get it to me though? I'm so busy all the time, but will help. I have a disc and a DTI. I'm at Gatwick. I can do it Tuesday night from 7. Inlet valve opens 40 degrees before TDC and closes 76 degrees after BDC. So full lift happens 40+180+76=296 296 / 2 (to find mid lift) = 148 148 - 40 (before TDC) = 108 So your inlet valve is fully open at 108 After TDC. So find TDC with a DTI on top of no 1 piston and put a pointer from your block to the timing disc "0" (selotape the disc onto your flywheel), when you turn the engine over clockwise with the DTI moved to the top of a push rod down onto the inlet follower of no 1 cylinder you should see the highest reading at 108 degrees on your timing disk. If not adjust the vernier. Or ask Posse - he's just playing dumb - but we know better!!
johnny_h Posted February 3, 2008 Author Report Posted February 3, 2008 Great helpings! I owe you a beer or two at the pod! Posse knows more than he is letting on lol.
