RFChris Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 ....does such a thing exist, or am i going to have to go 5-cog.
capriaddict Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 5-cog with quick shift not alot better than standard 4 speed shift imho... If your going to do loads of motorway work then go for the 5-speed conversion ( plenty of hassle though). personaly i would suggest having the 4 speed rebuilt then it will feel tighter and quicker
john_3.0s Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 ....does such a thing exist, or am i going to have to go 5-cog. You can make them, I had a design somewhere but its not a straght forward job like on a type 9. fitting a type 9 5 speed to an essex is a bit of hassle in itself as you need a 2.5 essex bellhousing which are as rare as rocking horse......so your a bit stuffed really im afraid
danny69 Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 You can buy one from Milton for £140. It bolts straight on. It is for the 2000E box but it is the same stick as the type 5 which you have. I am having a go at making my own and I`ll let you know how it goes in due course. If the gear stick feels sloppy all you need is a new bush turned up for the bottom of the stick, the plastic one will probably be missing or long since disentegrated. Quad cam capri posted a drawing of what you need a few weeks ago in the capri section in answer to one of my posts.

I think the milton one would only fit the 2000e or maybe im wrong??
john_3.0s Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 just had a look at a pic of my 2000e box and danny your quite right it does look the same as a type 5. I think i remember reading a thing on the web about making your own quick shift that raised up the plate by placing a spacer between in and the box and then moved the ball up the shaft of the stick a bit to effectivly move the falcrum higher to increase the throw of the end of the stick that selects the gears
danny69 Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 Yep, the 2000e "bullet" 3 rail box is basically just a smaller version of the type 5, visually similar from above with the 3 bolt pattern for the gearstick rear cover plate. The gear stick just unscrews from a Type 5 too.
