ZetecVan 2.0 Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 Just been down to the local tyre place for a recommendation. They suggested Yokos, but said not that grippy in the wet. Then they suggested Dunlops which were a harder compound, and grippy in both wet and dry, but the price is £68 a corner. For those of you with Yoko's, is it really *that* scary in the wet or should I just go for them? The tyres that are on there at the mo are bad in the wet. Little story... When I went in there I said I was after some high performance tyres for my van. The guy who served me looked up and said 'Oh I remember that van.'. There was a new lad there, about 16 years old, and he pointed at the van and said, laughing 'You want high performance tyres... FOR THAT????'... I looked at him, and it quite rattled me. You don't talk to a customer like that!. So I said 'It's got a two litre mondeo engine producing 153bhp.'. The guy behind me in the queue who looked like a biker, said laughing 'Oh I guess you do then'. I said to the lad 'I need new tyres because it's not funny wheelspinning at 70 on the bypass'... That shut him up. Anyhoo, I talked tyres with the other guy, and left, only to find the whole workshop stood around the van like giddy little kids. 'Do you want me to open the bonnet?' I asked, knowing the answer 'Yes please..' the giddy kids squeeled.... Then after looking at it, they wanted me to do a burnout down the car park.. How could I refuse
Burns Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 Then after looking at it, they wanted me to do a burnout down the car park.. How could I refuse hence the need for new tires
razersedge Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 i've got the a539 yok's and they are a great tyre and they seam to be good in the wet not that i drive in it much but a few years ago my dad aqua plained his van in the wet and it went up a round about, it was a astra van and that had dunlops on it but that was terrible in the wet it was all over the place but after it got repaired he threw the tyres away and put yoki's on it cos i was always ranting and raving about them and it was great in the wet after that in fact it was almost as good in the wet as it was in the dry, ok it was front wheel drive but the difference amazing the only thing was that they only use to last 20,000 miles insted of 40,000 miles but that was mostly moterway driving but i would say they are talking out of their arses because yoki's are a soft compound tyre and continental's are a soft compound tyre and they are the "rain tyre"
razersedge Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 and firestones are lethal on a rwd old ford and they are a hard compound tyre and national tyres do a539's for £48 a corner fitted http://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/home.asp?gclid=COXX8ouat5ECFQSiiQod0HscZA
MR "S" Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 MY BROTHER TONY USED TO RUN YOKO A539,BUT THEY ARE NOT TOO GOOD IN WET & AQUA PLANE QUITE BADLY ON EXCESSIVE ROAD WATER. HE FOUND YOKO "AVS" , WHICH ARE DIRECTIONAL ARE BRILL IN BOTH WET & DRY CONDITIONS. THEY WERE 195/50VR15,DEPENDS ON TYRE SIZE. HOPE THIS HELPS. PRICE ?? BEEN A WHILE ..
4parajon Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 I bought Toyo's on the strength of P.I.G's reccomendation, although I havent used them in anger yet but if you have seen P.I.G. drive, they do put up with a bit stick off him.
Guest MK1gaz Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 I've got Yoko A539's on mine and they're great . £200 a set fitted so can't complain really . Sweet in the wet as well unless i push the throttle too hard
Noodles Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 I had yokos on another car they aint great in the wet
Toby Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 Yoko 48's and 032's both knocked for being bad in the wet but in my experience fantastic wet or dry. Life not brilliant, but grip like fook.
davreeve Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 Had yoko Ao32,s on an escort, superb in the dry and not too bad in the wet but as already mentioned they have a short lifespan due to being soft. Have yoko a539,s on the fiesta which i would describe as adequat but not that great although they have a much longer lifespan.
Guest MK1gaz Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 A tyre that's brilliant in the wet can't be brilliant in the dry so you can't win . Good dry tyres are most important because that's when most people drive their oldskoolfords hard . Just have to be more carefull in the rain but that's life
stan the dj Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 Alright fella i run a tyre shop in Reading i put 195/55 x13 uniroyals on my tina handle well in both wet an dry plus u get fair miles out of them can fit them for £50 plus vat a corner let me know p.s those tyres r renault 5 turbo fitment so can handle the power

Did the same kid see you do the burnout? I guess he won't pass any judgment in the future! If you get any comments again the future, say the car is standard with no mods - you just want some performance tyres - let them all laugh and then do the burnout!
