FredTransit Posted April 9, 2008 Author Report Posted April 9, 2008 Took advantage of the good weather yesterday, and fitted these, the Mk2 mirrors had to go - I have only had them for about 25 years , bought them to fit to our first Mk1 transit, then found out the arms were ally so we couldn't chrome them, so had the arms copied. I think they came off a VW LT or a Merc, the heads are modern generic though as the originals were both cracked. They are black plastic, so I painted them hammerite. I think they suit the truck, and we can use the Mk2 head elsewhere The beacon works!
bortaf Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 you wanna join my transit crewcab club membership is free but you need to make the sarnies at the next AGM P.S the next AGM is in your front garden by the way
FredTransit Posted April 9, 2008 Author Report Posted April 9, 2008 OK, can I be club sec cos we also have a Mk2.......
FredTransit Posted April 21, 2008 Author Report Posted April 21, 2008 Took advantage of last week's good weather and did a bit to the cab. Before After During After Overall And this is what I am up against close up. I might change the bonnet altogether before the proper paint job. Due to the 'Dulux paint applied with a Dulux Dog' current finish it was impossible to use a sander, it just kept getting clogged up so wet and dry by hand was the only way.
FredTransit Posted April 23, 2008 Author Report Posted April 23, 2008 Would you fookin believe it! Some b'stard has scratched my lovely dulux finish! I can't believe what low standards the vandals have round here. No big deal cos she will be getting resprayed eventually.
john_3.0s Posted April 24, 2008 Report Posted April 24, 2008 cant you use paint stripper to get it off rather than sanding, it'll take you forever! cab looks ace though, i love an old tranny and thats gotta be a rare old thing now days
FredTransit Posted April 24, 2008 Author Report Posted April 24, 2008 I am a bit wary of paint stripper, it can get trapped in seams and trim lines, and bugger up the new paint. It's a pain but the hand wet and dry sanding has made a really good finish. Thanks BTW, I dread to think how few Mk1 crewcabs were made in the first place, let alone how may are left.

Any automotive paints will react badly on household paint that was applied on the bodyshell, I should know as I was ex-professional paint sprayer till I quit the job couple of years ago. As for paint stripper getting to all seams and trim lines, I usually put layers of masking tape (2" wide tape) over the gaps and seams, then applies paint stripper over one panel at time and scrap the old paint till bare metal then go over to another panel etc, hope it is of help mate Sean
FredTransit Posted April 24, 2008 Author Report Posted April 24, 2008 Thanks for the masking tape tip, but I am not brave enough to go to bare metal on the street! Anyway I suspect the paint is vinyl silk, would stripper work on it? I put regular primer over the paint I sanded and it looks like it's fine (no reaction), but I went down to the red underneath which smelled like celly.
FredTransit Posted January 10, 2009 Author Report Posted January 10, 2009 Well not much happened with her, except the other day the fuel pump packed up! That done, was taking her to bed, going up the A40, and had forgot the Mk1 transit effect! had some bloke following me honking and giving me the thumbs up! At first I thought something had dropped off or she was belching smoke, but he pulled up along side and waved and gave me the thumbs up. You forget when you haven't driven a Mk1 for a bit, people love em!
escortwithsunroof Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 that is one very tasty period truck i love it
