Anybody know where I can get this done in or around London? It's a V4 tranny engine (blew a hose, did the head gasket, but one head is warped) and whilst I am at it might as well get the hardened valve seats done.

i dont know how much you will need off the heads but it is true about the inlet manifold on a v engine.

as you reduce the height of the heads you bring the inlet faces of the heads closer together, that means you need to face the manifold too other wise the manifold wont seal against the heads. but the amount taken off the heads is NOT the amount youl need to take off the manifold!

the best thing to do is go to an experience engine shop, ones thats done plenty of v motors before.

Hi Rog

the Quote of £500 was to fully Recon the pair of heads & convert them to Lead free ( New guides , New Valves Supply & fit Lead free inserts , Decoke them & skim them & fit new core plugs & Paint them )

Just to skim them is £60 + vat the pair

Yes indeed it was, but I have got a far lower quote for the same work. £60 is pretty much the going rate for skimming, but £440 for the other work? If I had the time I would send it to Sheffield, where I am having another V4 rebuilt. Up to now I have spent £240 on it, including the valve seats.

I have to vouch for Steve's work here, he did a mega job on my engine.

Remember it is for two heads and he puts stainless steel inserts on both the exhaust and inlet valve seats unlike some who just do the exhaust seats (Burton included). I don't think he would mind me saying that I could have got the work done elsewhere for cheaper but you get what you pay for and it wouldn't have been done with the same care or quality of work.

PS steve, sorted my strange ignitions woes. It goes like the f**king clappers now! Due to book it in to RR soon. I'll let you know how it goes.

Don't get me wrong, I don't doubt it, but if I looked for long enough i could get a whole van with good V4 for £500 (no, I know not road legal, a scrapper), in fact I was offered one for £400 very recently.

maybe pintos, but V4s are getting hard to come by! I am half tempted to fit a pinto, but it will take a bit of firewall bashing. The other V4 we are having rebuilt is from the orange Mk1 LWB that's only got less than 6000 miles on it, so it's worth doing.

Go the essex route!

BTW there's an essex in the recovery truck.....

Anyway, back on topic, how different are the HC and LC heads? Would these work on a tranny engine?

V4 heads on ebay clicky

It says not for transit though. Come to think of it, maybe the van has a car HC engine, cos it was originally a 1600 and spent much of it's life as a camper. But if it's a tranny engine would the HC heads work?
