caprifan Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 mate at work has an MGF (snigger....girls car snigger) had a problem last night whilst driving, car totally died...engine and all electrics.....lights dash everything.... the car will now turn over but won't fire....dash warning lights are back.... he checked the dipstick to check oil level and has some mayo on the dipstick so possible head gasket as well possibly but the car isn't overheating.... ...any ideas as to what this could be......and if the head gasket is on its way out what sort of price should he be paying so he doesn't get done.... thanks anyone....
Tom Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 start at the beginning mate. spark, fuel, scrap yard?
bashmk1 Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 if theres mayo on the dipstick sounds like its got hot. have you checked the water bottle??? rovers will never ever tell you there overheating on the gauge, they will just do it and your left to foot the bill. prices. k16 - 600ish k16 vvc - 700ish i would recommend changing the pump and stat, also make sure the rad is ok. anything else bud?

Anything with a Rover badge is affectionately known as a two grander... Meaning it'll cost at least £2000 to repair it if it breaks down

Admin Vista Posted November 8, 2006 Admin Report Posted November 8, 2006 Well I'm gonna turn the other cheek, I owned an MGF VVC for over 3 years and it was without question the most reliable car I've ever had. Far quicker than it's MR2 and MX5 rivals and in the right hands did handle and was a lot of fun. So despite them having dodgy reliability records as they get a bit long in the tooth (how many high revving engines don't suffer at some point) I'm gonna stick by mine, it was certainly better than the pile of German crap Mercedes SLK I replaced it with, that cost nearly £3k in repairs in 2 1/2 years ........never again.

bashmk1 Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 no problem chris, if theres ever a problem with the rovers it always headgasket. cos to be honest they rarely fail on a lot else. the bottom ends are surprisingly strong. if its started thats always good, and if it runs, even better. dont worry if it has a misfire that'll just be the water getting into the cylinders, especially bad on start ups. funnily enough we did 2 today at work. the one i worked on was particularly bad, i would always recommend water pump, stat and new bolts. how many high revving engines don't suffer at some point v-tecs, one of the best engines ever ever ever!!!
