antz Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 HELP!!!!! I need to learn to drift better I currently do its been pissing me off and I just cant get the knack of it. Whats worse is my uncle is a qualified D1 drift racer (i would ask him but he lives 3 hours away) and my dad can drift his suzuki Jimny better than i can the escort Mine usually ends up with a little flick and nothing else or too much opposite lock and a 180 spin I can only really get the arse out on grass which isnt much use cos you can make a FWD car drift on grass You seen Fast and the furious tokyo drift when the america is drifing in the docks and his everything....thats me...literally Anyone got any hint or tips to help me get it right? HELP!!!!!
Guest MK1gaz Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 yes , get a Harris pinto and a slipper cos even a grandmother can drift an escort then !!!!!!

Guest MK1gaz Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 You will need a bit of uuuumph and a slipper and you'll be fine mate . Go to a wet empty car park for a play and you will drift an escort in 5 mins no sweat as they are piss easy to slide
antz Posted February 21, 2008 Author Report Posted February 21, 2008 You will need a bit of uuuumph and a slipper and you'll be fine mate . Go to a wet empty car park for a play and you will drift an escort in 5 mins no sweat as they are piss easy to slide well im getting the 1700 in soon....my problem is not getting the rear out...thats easy but its keeping it going!!!! i either give it too much and go right round, or give it too much opposite lock and still end up right round OR....it does a qucik flick that looks gay... and i cant find a nice carpark near me thats emtpy
Guest MK1gaz Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 Just keep bliping the throttle once the car gets sideways , this allows you to maintain a slide easy
antz Posted February 21, 2008 Author Report Posted February 21, 2008 i always give it too much opposite lock too early though and im not smooth with it..im like a robot i know where i go wrong but i cant make it happen
antz Posted February 21, 2008 Author Report Posted February 21, 2008 Practice practice practice.... heres where problem number 2 lies.... theres nowhere i can possibly think of round my area to get a good practice in....everywhere that has good potential is watched closely by the police because of the fools in their chav cars trying to drag race it
bmxdave Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 Your scared. You might not now it, but your still not confident enough yet. I went through a phase at first of the same thing. Spin or do the tinyest little slide ever. Then i just thought 'fook it' and threw myself at a few roundabouts. Im still shit, but i feel far more confident and willing to get the arse end out, and im a lot more consistent. Now if i had a place to practice it would be brilliant but i dont. All i can say is just stick it in there. As long as your not silly you wont have any bumps. I bent a driveshaft on my triumph spinning on a roundabout and its because i was being silly and it was kidney shaped and i managed to come back into it. If it was a proper round roundabout itd have been fine. All i did was hammer it straight again and a few days later saw to it that i went round it without crashing. Its all about confidence. I used to stiffen up and almost panic but now i dont.
antz Posted February 21, 2008 Author Report Posted February 21, 2008 i know its confidence cos when i first got the car i got too cocky and spun it right round on a coprner and its annoyed me ever since cos ive had a few close calls... i usualyl end up taking a gay line as well and get too far in to get the rear out i know what im doing wrong i just cant make it better and last time i thought 'fook it' and went for it.....it actually worked....but i was ina volvo i have a fear of hitting the curb too...dont wanna pay to fix it all
MexDan Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 It's just practice mate... all of a sudden it will click and you will be slip sliding all the way to the tyre shop! If you know that you are opposite locking it to early then just hold it in a bit longer before u flick it back the other way! Remember not to lift off completely as u will end up facing the wrong way!! Blip the throttle as gaz said and you will be able to feel the car either slide out or pull straighter depending on weather you accelerating or deaccelerating. If you still cant get it to do it you could try to scandinavian flick it into a corner.. although u have to be careful with that sometimes!! The less power you have the more you will need to focus on using the cars bodyweight to get it into the slide. Slide it in.. blip it.. and when your bored power out!
BIGKEV Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 Antz - grow a pair and get to an industrial estate mate - wait till its a bit wet then just go for it. Trust me - as long as the car doesnt come to a dead stop when you hit something (like a kurb or suchlike) then it will live to fight another day. Its only money at the end of the day. P.S. I hate money - worst thing in the world. apart from religion.
Deano1351 Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 Practice makes perfect, one thing that got my head round it was the amount of opposite lock you get with a scort, loads, once the back goes you can steer it left a lot, if it starts to straighten up nail the throttle and if the back goes too much give it more opposite, and dont forget to be lively with it too, theres no slouching with sideways, you gotta be quick and if it goes to the point of no return jump on the brakes, keep at it Antz, iv got a mate with a supercharged omega who couldnt drift for toffee but now after loads of practice hes a master at it
antz Posted February 21, 2008 Author Report Posted February 21, 2008 thansk for the advice people!!! doesnt help that my local industrial estate is a straight line its like a 1/4 mile stretch with cameras and a 24hour factory/goverment building right at the enterance.....fook! will have to go out for a midnight session one day. i do have the odd play ona roundabout but its not enough...i need more!!! i know im too early with the oppsotie lock strightening up almost stright away but i try to hold it and my gut says HOLD IT LONGER...my hands and brain go NO WAY!!!.... its like a war with myself! bigkev i like your way of putting it...grow a pair and get out there
bullittcraig Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 Your problem is that your trying to hard and not feeling what the car is doing. You dont have enough faith in yourself or the car. The more you think about what your trying to achieve the less chance it will work. as the others said practice is the key.
antz Posted February 21, 2008 Author Report Posted February 21, 2008 thanks!!! and just when i get in the mood to go practice...im going away for the weekend and the cars in the garage for all of next week...typical i think too much....i suppose i should go with the flow...there we go im thinking too much
Tom Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 i think you'll find it a lot harder to do it cos you're underpowered (1300 right?) you'll find it hard to break traction and keep both wheels spinning with an open diff and not a lot of power i remember trying to get mine sideways when it was an 1100 using speed and tight corners to break traction and i had the same problem, all you're doing is correcting a slide. Kicking the back out and holding it is a lot different and is a bastard to perfect. Its all about getting the rear wheels spinning and keeping an even balance between them and the steering, If you spin the wheels too fast it just changes ends - wait til the 1700 is in then you'll find it a whole lot easier
antz Posted February 21, 2008 Author Report Posted February 21, 2008 thanks tom....yes its still a 1300 and im getting the lsd fitted on monday. i did think that a might be a disadvantage because of the little engine....its a right bugger. could explain why the volvo is easier to drift cos its a 2.0
Tom Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 Yeah mate you'll struggle like hell to get the wheels spinning whilst cornering in yours unless it real greasy out, but like the others said it takes practise ................................. and balls
oliwally Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 do it somewhere very wide. i wasnt trying to drift when this happened but it was on a tight road and it ended very very sadly
antz Posted February 21, 2008 Author Report Posted February 21, 2008 exactly what im afraid of!!!! most roads round here are tight roundabouts been AAAAT IN COUNTREEE
bmxdave Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 I found it hard work with the 1300 even to break traction in the dry but in the wet i found it easier then the triumph or the 2.1 as it didnt want to over do itself all the time. It also helped me get used to the steering side of things without worrying about power. Power isnt everything. Theres 160bhp AE86's out there in the D1 raping 500bhp R34's amd S15's.
antz Posted February 21, 2008 Author Report Posted February 21, 2008 i knwo what ya mean dave. its all swings and roundaboouts.....literally
DAZZA Posted February 22, 2008 Report Posted February 22, 2008 got a standard 2L in the 100E, I can whack the back a bit, but without a slipper it looks/sounds and probably just is....... Sh*te.
