I had difficaulty fitting my prop on saturday, as you said i have never had a problem with getting it on before. I just jiggled it about and eventually it went on.

Bit of a long shot here John but sometimes theres grease etc. down the shaft which can cause a hydraulic effect trapping air in the shaft stopping the prop going any further-try cleaning off both ends-worth a go not sure what else it could be?? :thumbsup:

do you know i wondered that whilst stiiting on the throne this morning (do all my best thinking there) i did give it a light smear of grease too so that could be it. will have another go tonight :thumbsup: thanks

Grrrrrrr still struggling here :evil::evil::evil:

cleaned out the prop end, its now squeeky clean. There isnt a key way or anything like that i can see other then a spline missing from the prop but no corresponding missing spline on the gearbox so that shouldnt be the problem.

so heres what happens, gearbox output shaft moves freely when prop is on about an inch, put it in gear and it locks solid so its defo engaged with the gearbox splines. prop dont want to go any further so give it a bang with the knocking stick and it goes on about another 1/2 inch (still not far enough to fit on the diff flange by a good inch or so). now the prop wont turn when the gearbox is in neutral!!!! WTF?? :evil:

seems to me like there is summin funny going on with the box...or have i gone mad! never had this prob before over the years and it came off with no probs - HELP ME BEFORE I GO MAD!!!!!

well this one has a bit of surface rust where its been stood in the workshop for 6 months or so. maybe thats is, do you mean on the outside of the prop tube where it goes into the gearbox tail housing? or was it on the inside?

You shouldn't need a hammer to fit John, they should slide on pretty easy.

defo mate, never had to use a hammer before :? didnt want to hit it too hard as was worried about damaging the UJ anyway. god i love these old cars :lol:

The missing spline on the propshaft could be the clue. The corresponding spline on the gearbox may not be easily seen. Try fitting the shaft in each possible postion i.e. if it don't fit turn the shaft to the next spline and try again.

i have turned the gearbox shaft right round a few times without the prop on and it dosent have any splines missing from it so im pretty sure thats not the problem - ill have another look later though just to be sure. Cheers :thumbsup:
