I have been promising to do this ever since i lost two cylinders last year (all JohnnyH's Fault: ;) ).

 

Well.... Finally got my bits and pieces together and removed the head.. to find this. Definitely a very sad looking gasket. It lasted nine years which is an achievement considering what I have put the old girl through!!!

 

Will have her up and ready for next month so hopefully a first run for the ship n trades meeting in April.

Dont tempt me :). You laugh but someone probably would!!

 

I am after a bit of advice as well. Should I replace the head bolts??

 

I have been told I should by one person and that I shouldnt by another, SO I turn to the people who would know this information for sure....... .

 

also, does anyone have torque measurements for the tightness of the bolts once back on?? I seem to have lost my workshop manual.!! Thanks people.

 

BTW. Johnny/Mickey?? Are you about next thursday for the meeting or is it still too cold for ya??

thats a xflow diagram , and i,m seeing a blown pinto head gasket ??????

 

clean out the head bolt threads in the block before you do anything , turn your head upside down clean off all old traces of gasket with some light emery cloth & wd40, then try and get a straight edge like a steel ruler or equivalant hold it on the head at different points and see if you can get 20 thou feeler gauge underneath it , if so you may want to think about a skim , hope this helps :thumbsup:

I doubt you'll need new head bolts unless yours have been over tightened, which is unlikely as we've said on aprevious thread, everyone uses a torque wrench on the head bolts, but not there wheel nuts!! :ykt::lol:

 

A little tip - put some oil / grease on the threads and under the head, you want the bolts to turn as easily as possible when you torque them up, and once you've tightened them to say about 50 ft lbs, do the last part in one, smooth, flowing movement up to the correct settings, the stop - start will give misleading figures.

 

I can't help with the pinto torque figures though sorry.

i could have been worse , heres mine when i took it off

when you are ready to put the head back on , make sure you blow the water out the head bolt holes as you cant compress the water in the holes , so you may end up cracking the block.

Can't wait to see it out and about again mate... your's is the BROWN one isn't it :P:wink::lol:

 

BTW, head bolts... I have an Autodata book down the shed. Will post them up in a minute for you... if I don't get beaten to it of course :lol:

:shock: I bet that sounded rough!! What did the bottom end look like? Have you still got the valve head on your mantle piece as a trophy? :lol:
