It is a 1972 1100L in the manual it says when they were new they were fitted with a 4.1 diff but there was an option for a 3.77 diff. Is there anyway of finding out which of the two i have?

If someone could let me know that would be great

Take out the diff and count the teeth or if your lucky it will have a little tag on the outside that tells you the ratio . It will be a 4:1 though

if you have a tacho then do the calculations for a speed at a given rpm by calculating the gear ration and tyre diameters. Otherwise drop it in neutral and turn the prop by hand and count how many rotations of the prop it takes to turn a wheel once. easier to lock one wheel in place to stop itturing and count the same but for 2 revolutions of the free wheel

As John said, jack it up on one side out of gear, slide under it with a bit of chalk and perhaps a brick, mark the tyre on the inside and use the brick on its end or whatever to mark the start position on the ground. Mark or notice the prop start position, 4 and a bit turns of the prop to one turn of the wheel and guess what you've got!! Around 3 and 3/4 turns of the prop to one of the wheel and...........3.77

Ah thats good then so if i wanna put a 1600 in i dont need to change the diff is that right :?

Also no i dont wanna swap mate as i might put a 1600 in there.

All depends what you want the car to do mate.... If you want acceleration then you will want to chuck the 4.1 diff in there.. but for better cruising use the 3.7 would be better.

Also depends on the ratios in your gearbox...

Decide what you want the car to behave like and then you can go about sorting the parts for it that way!!
