Rick Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 when welding thick steel how do you get really good penetration iv been doin a bit of heavy duty work today but its not strong enough and thats with the welder on max. steel was about 8mm thick but the welds broke off once i started hammering it about.... its for a folding bollard before you ask is its juts cuz im shit at welding or you reckon i need more power
Rick Posted March 22, 2008 Author Report Posted March 22, 2008 dunno off the top of my head. i reckon it might be cuz it was a bit windy today might have blown all the co2 away
Fiesta Steve Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 You'd need a very big amp welder to get good penetration on 8mm steel. Welding with no gas won't help either.
X FLOW EDDY Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 You could do with a big stick welder for that, 140-150 amp with a 3.5mm rod !!!
V8ian Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 Weld prep it by grinding back to a Vee, If needed, do a penetration run deep into the Vee and then do a run too one side of the penetration weld, and then to the other side, wire brushing inbetween runs to get things clean, then run a capping weld over the top.
