ekjim Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 im thinking of getting a quiafe atb diff for my anglia to help with traction when launching could anyone give me personel experience of this diff and what is involved in fitting one ?
Guest MK1gaz Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 They're brilliant in a street car mate , works ace in mine . Just bolts straight into your standard diff with no preload/set up required . Uses normal cheap gear oil and they are quiet with no clonking and rattling noises . They also never lock 100% solid and pulse power from one wheel to the other to aid traction , this action helps save your halfshafts
pelvins Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 been fine in mine and ive gave it loads of stick !
ekjim Posted April 12, 2008 Author Report Posted April 12, 2008 thanks guys when you say it bolts straight in do you use your own crown wheel and bolt this on? does anyone have any pics of fitting one and where's cheapest to buy one ? thanks
Guest MK1gaz Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Yes it bolts onto your existing CWP etc . You may need a vice and an air rachet really so best to get a garage to fit it into the diff . Peter Loyld rallying was the cheapest last year
me bitch Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 ive been thinking about getting ATB how good are they for a bit of sidways action
Guest MK1gaz Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 ive been thinking about getting ATB how good are they for a bit of sidways actionWell if you've seen mine then you'll know it goes sideways in 3 gears !!!!!!!!
Guest MK1gaz Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 ive been thinking about getting ATB how good are they for a bit of sidways actionWhat engine have you got ? If you have a low power/standardish type engine then the car will go sideways/doughnut easier with a plate type LSD or a locker . When i had my other engine the car would only doughnut in 2nd but not in 1st . This was ok though once you knew about it . With my new engine the ATB doughnuts in 1st gear now for some reason (must be the extra power i suppose) . Also i find that the ATB's are much more forgiving compared to the plate LSD's i've had in the past , it's practically impossible to crash when sliding everywhere with one which is handy
me bitch Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 ive got a lotus twincam +40 bigger valves cams ported polished engines not running yet so not sure on power i have heard an atb is beter for handling wot would you go for
oliwally Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 ive got a lotus twincam +40 bigger valves cams ported polished engines not running yet so not sure on power i have heard an atb is beter for handling wot would you go for Welded

If you do proper motorsport (rallying etc) then i'd get a plate LSD

ZetecVan 2.0 Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 I agree with Gaz. I've an ATB in my van, and it really is 'fit and forget'. It is very predictable round corners and can make it slide easily. I've never tried doughnuts in it because the carparks are always in use...!
ekjim Posted April 12, 2008 Author Report Posted April 12, 2008 i tried a welded diff last year for drag racing and i lunched it on the startline not sure if i had put enough weld round the planitory gears though
Guest MK1gaz Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 English axles/diffs/halfshafts will break in this order = Lockers = these will still smash shafts even with 100bhp pushrods !!!!!!!! Plate slippers = these are miles better than lockers and will break far less shafts . ATB slippers = these make it very difficult to break shafts etc unless using very soft race rubber/slicks and dumping the clutch on a prepped drag strip startline . We all had lockers once and used to break shafts every weekend and that was on the street without even trying !!!!!!
kev16v Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 ive never broke a shaft with a lock diff.an i don't drive like a pussie either so it must be somthing ur doing gaz
Guest MK1gaz Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Not just me mate , everyone who had a locker used to break shafts easy . We used to carry them in the boot ready !!!!!!!
kev16v Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 they work for me no probs i use to be at thurrock lakeside every weekend in my escort doughnuting an hanging the shit out of it an it lov'd it too
Mr Sam Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 so whats an ATB likely to set you back im building mine for the strip and was just going to weld it but id like to use it on the road now and then
steve dray Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 I've got an ATB in mine, it was in my car when I bought it, didn't know it was there till I took it out to reseal the housing!! Never driven a car with a plate type diff so don't know how different they are. Mine gets a lot of hard launches and seems to be bullet proof (runs off to find something wooden to touch!! )
dal1cos Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 I HAVE A ATB IN MINE,NEVER HAD TO TOUCH IT AND GIVES EXCELLENT TRACTION FOR THE STRIP,(FIT AND FORGET)
Guest MK1gaz Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 so whats an ATB likely to set you back im building mine for the strip and was just going to weld it but id like to use it on the road now and thenBrand new they cost about £430 with postage + VAT etc . Secondhand they are about £300
