razersedge Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 what is the law with trailers because i haven't got a clue and as much as i don't want to i might have to consider going down this route because shakey is a long way away and i can see me braking things soon so. Can a mk 1 fiesta tow an escort and what would i be able to legaly use, a frame, 2 wheel or 4 wheel trailer
john_3.0s Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 Im not sure about weights etc of tow car vs trailer but i think if you got your licence after 1998 ish there are restrictions of the size of trailer you can tow.
razersedge Posted April 22, 2008 Author Report Posted April 22, 2008 had full car and licence since 1993 and a bike licence since 1994 so can drive anything except hgv
mossy Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 legally no a fiesta cannot tow ... well anything apart from those tiny halfrauds trailers. Using the mondeo i had i was still illegal towing, as the car you are towing with has to have an equal or greater towing weight then of the load your carrying. Say you use a 2.5 Mitsi Shogun TD which has a towing weight of 2800 kg... Say your escort weighs 1100kg and the trailer weighs 850kg then your all good. you can check parkers reviews to find out what the cars towing capacity is http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/browse/Manufacturers.aspx?rangenav=/cars/reviews/browse Hope that helps, any other questions then just ask, as ive done loads of research as i did have a trailer but had to get rid due to my licencse restrictions.

mossy Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 A 1996 mk4 fiesta...(thats the oldest fiesta i could find figures on!) has a towing capacity of 225kg! So nothing!
razersedge Posted April 22, 2008 Author Report Posted April 22, 2008 i thought you could tow a heavyer load if the trailer had 4 wheels or had brakes or something like that so the outcome is i've got more chance of being able to tow the fiesta with the escort which the wrong way round

Best bet is to get an old transit or something like that.
bortaf Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 A frames are for recovery only not for transporting and TBH if a trailor got a snake going the fiesta wouldn't stand a chance you'd loose both cars! rough rule of thumb is never tow more than 3/4 of the tow cars weight unless it's a 4X4 and that includes the trailer
escortmad79 Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 Buy a beavertail Transit, with your licence you can drive up to 7.5 tons
Smudger105e Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 Loads of towing threads in the Ask the Fuzz room
