i was expecting more power from it what if i was to change to a 4-speed box would that make it better

What is it, a 2L? Try advancing the timing. I'm running mine at 16 degrees BTDC. Also what carb are you using?

No, the ratios aren't that different and 4th is 1:1 in both 4 & 5 speed box's anyway.

There's your problem then. Single choke carbs are only good for one thing..well two actually:

Ford Transits and P100 Pickups.

Get a Weber 32/36 DGAV shoved on it. DO NOT put a K&N filter on it until you've enough money to take it to a rolling road to get the carburettor rejetted as it'll run lean until you do and not be a whole lot better. Also get a 4-2-1 manifold as well which will improve midrange torque compared to a 4-1.

In short it needs another £100 or so chucking at it until you can afford to buy a K&N and get it set up.
