Hi everyone i have a problem (and no its not medical before you ask) i bought a mk1 escort mex off ebay last year and it came with an old style logbook but no tags i sent it off to DVLA and they said that an examiner was to come and inspect the car. it had no stampings on the car as it is in a bad state of repair so they said that they would re-examine the car when its in a near road worthy condition my problem starts here i have no idea as to where or what to stamp on a tag and where can i get a plate to stamp the details on i have a few letters starting with BFAT but i have no colour code trim code etc can any body help also its registered 1973 L but the DVLA have said that its first reg was in 1980?

Please email me with any info

Thanks

Nick

First of all, welcome to the site

Secondly, all Mk1 Mex's and Rs2000's start BFAT, it stands for

B - Ford of Britain assembly

F - Aveley (assembly plant)

AT refers to the body type and is represents a 2 door saloon

Next should be two letters referring to the month and year of build then a car specific number.

All of this should be stamped in to the offside strut top plate and on a VIN plate to the left of centre of the slam panel. If neither are still present then there is no way of proving the cars original identity matches that on the log book you have. However if you PM me the chassis no you have on the log book I can give you more details.

edit: PS if there's no way a Mk1 Mex with a BFAT no was new in 1980, however it's theoretically possible that it was first registered then if it had began its life as a rally car.

Hi Welcome to the site.

Regarding your problem you can get replacement vin plates, so once you have all the details can get them stamped up ok.

If it's 1st registered in 1980 it could be that it was an Export car which found it's way back into the country in 1980 ?

They have stopped doing it now, but they used to put registration date on the V5 as the date it was brought into the country rather then when it was built.
