Josh_gsy Posted June 24, 2008 Report Posted June 24, 2008 i was having a chat with mates last night about mu i still do not what it is. something about friction i think. but yea so what im wandering is if the world was frictionless, the following things.... 1) would a bullet shot from a gun be slowed down by air resistance? 2) would fans work?
Messenjah Posted June 24, 2008 Report Posted June 24, 2008 if there was no frictiont hen that answer would be no to both ...
richie_stix Posted June 24, 2008 Report Posted June 24, 2008 damn you messenjah... i wanted to look smart!
Josh_gsy Posted June 24, 2008 Author Report Posted June 24, 2008 so im right in saying wind resistance is the friction of the air moving over the object? what about the air has it to displace if you imagine each particle as a solid it would have them bouncing off of it at the same angle it hit so if an air particle hits it head on it would try and add a force in the oposite direction slowing it down?? and as for a fan would it create any wind movement as if you imagine each particle as a solid surely they would bounce away from the fan at the same angle it hits it at as it spins? or am i just trying to over complicate things!?
richie_stix Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 no, your on the right track... but air behaves more like a liquid... so imagine a fan like a propellor on a boat and the 'air resistance' is like the difference between a big flat fronted boat and a speed boat... but the difference with air is varies in pressure a lot more than a liquid, liquids tend to ahve to be heated to get pressure in them... so as you were saying about the solid particles of air bouncing off all in the same direction... it doesn't happen cos air particles rush to fill in lower pressured areas, such as under a diffuser, which mean they don't all go the same way but create 'turbulance'... any clearer, that was some quite retarded explanation by me!

X-pack-Glyn Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 Fluid dynamics , notice how the chimps piss hits the walls and bounces off.
Josh_gsy Posted June 25, 2008 Author Report Posted June 25, 2008 cheers i think i got the basis of this now cheers

5hane Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 hence proper race cars are polished loads so they are smoother through the air ie quicker and bob sleghs there very shiny

bortaf Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 Depends how often you "polish" em i guess can i just say "flange" again only cos i think it's funny like
