Retro-gone. Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 202 pinto 2litre, is there such a thing and what were they fitted to? ive been offered one and the guy said its a RS2000 engine.?
Noodles Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 I though they where Afican and really rare, might be a old wives tale though
Admin Vista Posted July 17, 2008 Admin Report Posted July 17, 2008 Yes there is a 202 block, here's what I believe to be the story about the various pinto blocks. 20 is the early block and the one to have if you're going for any historic racing 202 block is from the 4x4 Cosworths and is very strong but very expensive 205 block was the standard unit in use across the bulk of the pinto range from 1985 on, it was used on 2wd Cosworths but was also used in Low compression units such as the Transit and P100, that said the block itself is the same. The 205 block is the one that's relatively cheap to obtain still and is a good casting that can stand being bored out to 93 or possibly 94mm (though the latter may leave it a little thin) 205 blocks can be low compression and it's the pistons that are different. The head itself should be the same and may even be that later style injection head with oval inlet ports. However the cam will likely need upgraded. Which leaves the 200 block and I understand that to be a motorsport block
PIG Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 the 200 block is from the 4x4 cos and escort cos m8 there are some with cast numbers that end in 99 which are weak items when running a lot of power throu them, the 202 block can be found in transits i believe,205 block is the comon type normally found tho
Retro-gone. Posted July 17, 2008 Author Report Posted July 17, 2008 so the 202 engine ive bin offered is from a transit?? its £80, guy said he ran it in his escort for a while and it pulled like a train, has a bigger than stock cam in it too. i was told the transit motor was low compression and not to fit one in my capri.. its all very confusing
mk1mexico Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 I believe the 202 to be a low compression Transit engine and know a few people been disappointed after fitting them to their escorts. Ripe for a supercharger though
Retro-gone. Posted July 17, 2008 Author Report Posted July 17, 2008 ok thanks for the info, il carry on with the search
MEXY867M Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 I have asked this question before and had the same reply mate,I am currently running a 202 block in my van at the moment it orginally came out of a capri,I will admit it is a sweet running engine never had a problem with it plenty of pull etc,
Retro-gone. Posted July 17, 2008 Author Report Posted July 17, 2008 oh god as if i wasnt confused enough already, seems to me nobody actually knows for definate whats what on these engines this guy told me this particular 202 engine came out of an rs2000, now i dont wanna buy it, fit it to find its slower than my 1600! what to do what to do
Copey Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 oh god as if i wasnt confused enough already, seems to me nobody actually knows for definate whats what on these engines this guy told me this particular 202 engine came out of an rs2000, now i dont wanna buy it, fit it to find its slower than my 1600! what to do what to do *cough*turbo*cough*
mk1mexico Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 Well rest assured it never came factory fitted in an RS2000, thats for sure
Fishtailparka Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 A 202 block is pretty much the same as a 205 block. The main difference is there is more webbing around the gearbox bolt holes. Even if it did start its life as a low comp engine that doesn't mean it still is. Simply changing the pistons will make it a normal compression engine. Low comp engines aren't the end of the world either. I have one and it does me OK.
Retro-gone. Posted July 18, 2008 Author Report Posted July 18, 2008 ahh, now its al starting to make sense to me. so you have a stock 202 in your car yeah, so what is the performance like?
