Now, a technical question. Is a turbo a turbo, or should i try and just put another rover one on there? (current turbo is nearing its death apparently)

I guess you could fit any make or model providing they output the same boost pressure and volume. You could experiment with upping the boost or fitting a bigger turbo, but bigger turbos take longer to spin up, ergo more turbo lag. I believe that's why the later Escort Cosworths had smaller turbos than the early ones. The most straightforward option is probably to fit like for like.
