Doc Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Sit axle stands under the car at the wanted height and heat up the springs till they de camber and the car rests on the stands and then cool them with water ...........does that work? or will i fook the springs
Pipster007 Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 I do remember from when I was in school, that various metals need to be cooled very slowly. If they cool too quickly, the metal becomes brittle. It's not a job I'd try personally
bronze4door Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 its cheap enought to get them de-cambered i was quoated £50 for a pair to be recond and de-cambered
hotrodholty Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 ivheard of people doing it with coil springs, but as said above once they are cooled too quickly they snap. i would have thought it would be even worse on a leaf spring due to the size of them, be very hard to heat them evenly.
NeilT Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 thats prity much how they use to do it back in the day but ints not excatly scientific lol
4parajon Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Mine only cost £50 to be de-cambered as well, can pass you guys info if its of use
countrybumpkin Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 it would be possible but the springs would need cooled in oil
over_head_cam Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Wayne addressed a similar post in earlier this year. What you need to do is set another set of axle stands lower by exactly the amount you want to lower the car by by, then heat the springs (together) about 4 inches from the rear shackle and let the car sink down to the second set of stands. Let them cool naturally, or you will alter the temper of the spring. That's how I read it, but don't take my word for it
DAZZA Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Leaf it out ......... Careful, I did this on my old escort van...... they snapped eventually.
Tom Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 As Phil said, if you cool them with a liquid you will harden them and make them brittle and they will snap.
5hane Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 ahhh, thats ive seen some with bends in them my dad has some and they are almost dead flat.. but have been fine for years
