painting rear axle

Just wondering whats the best way to go, should I spray can it then add a lacquer or just hammerite it? if I spray can it, is going to withstand heavy road use??

 

Just so you know, it’s not for an old ford, I’m working on the Mrs Dad’s 40yo Landrover, and its the next job to do.

I got mine grit blasted (paint striper will do)

 

 

then 4 coats of hammerright smooth (rattle can)

I done mine in plasticote paint, found it really good to use but hammerites good too

I'm sure Gary (Retro) says the best thing to use is bog standard gloss paint, never tried it myself though.

As a paint sprayer myself, I would say don't spray it

 

You can get a much thicker coat on with a brush and you'll be able to get in the nooks and crannies better than with a spray can.

 

Lets face it its not like you need a showroom finish, its under the car, protection should take priority over finish.

Thanks for all the advice.

I got all the crap off it today with a wire brush drill bit, and treated it to hammerite krust. just got to paint it with a brush, but thats a job for next week.
