Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted October 30, 2008 Report Posted October 30, 2008 i lowered my cortina yesterday only the rear (still got the front to do) i got a pair of second hand nearly new springs but to get it right on its arse i had to chop three coils out theyre cable tied in so they dont fall out if i go over a herendous jump or when i jack it up its lowered so the arch and wheel meet whan its sat not under load so for those of you who are familiar with mk5 cortinas thats low for a mk5 cortina as theres usually a 3 or 4 inch gap what do you reckon am i mental or is it going to be ok
Stu_B Posted October 30, 2008 Report Posted October 30, 2008 Fine mate Wishbones should be ok, the only time you wanna worry is on struts as the shorter spring puts a lot of load on the top mount.
Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted October 30, 2008 Report Posted October 30, 2008 oh cool i wast sure even though it does look well and drive ok
Stu_B Posted October 30, 2008 Report Posted October 30, 2008 Been thinking about this... I'm not so sure now? What locates the springs? Just thinking about if the suspension tops out
bortaf Posted October 30, 2008 Report Posted October 30, 2008 you'll be ok on the rear mate the diff will hit the trans tunnel when it's too low the fronts will camber up and wear the inner tyre edge but thats the price to look good theres really aint a lot of weight on the rear so you will have to take out more coils than the front, front is a pain to keep putting bcak together to test is all
Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted November 1, 2008 Report Posted November 1, 2008 doing the front next week but only got the 1 set of front springs so hope i dont go wrong
boXXer Posted November 1, 2008 Report Posted November 1, 2008 chopping springs is a bit sketch, but fook it, it more motorsport that way

bortaf Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 Yep coil overs are a right pain on the corty due to having wishbones on the front NOT stuts And at the rear changing to coil overs moves the springs to a different part of the lower arm and fecks up the spring rate calculations AND the shock mounts are not designed to take the weight of the car! And coil overs cost! and for what, coil overs are great if you get the car corner weighted and set up correctly otherwise they are a waist of time on a road car IMHO another "must have" like twin 40 on a standard engine Cut away chap i've done hundreds of thousands of miles on cut springs, especialy as raldes have dropped lowerd cortina springs from thier line up now as well you have very little choice Just remember to wire the bottoms of the rears in for when you jack it up if they are very short or you could waist more money and get shorter shocks
Stu_B Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 I don't see the harm of chopped springs on wishbones at all! Springs progressively stiffen as coils are removed so what's the harm? I'd be wary on struts... but do it anyway
