5 speed tranx

Any one use a 5 speed tranx or Quaife on the road ?

 

may have the chance to get a tranx

 

I looked at getting the diffrent 1st gear cluster for my T9 (2.98:1 gears in stead of the 3.36) but by the time i get it and pay for it to be fitted it is still not as strong as a staight cut box as i fancy a proper play on the strip and the 2nd hand box is just a bit dearer

 

so what are the like ?? and how noisey ?? as i use it a lot driving to shows etc

 

also who uses a paddle clutch on the road are they ok or a pig

I have a tran x 5 speedand there fine......But drive in 4th as its not straight cut lol

 

Can be noisy, and if you have other people in the car conversation is out the window once yoyur pushing the loud peddle.

 

Paddle clutch is, i would say each to there own,If your driving a lot in traffic it can be harsh....

 

But i have had both in my cortina for 2 years and i love it.......

i got a tranx with a very long 1st believe it to be a 2.25 . for a while it was a novelty the noise is awesome at full chat but for road use after a while its annoying esp if round town . 3rd gear was noisiest 4th dead quiet 5 not too bad but again any distance its annoying after a while . so i put a standard type 9 in ,didnt realise how much i miss that 1st gear , you wouldnt think how much difference it makes , i mean how often do you be in 1st but it was awesome you could really do a wicked power slide

If your looking for a quiet smooth ride then stay away from straight cut boxes and paddle plates

 

paddle plate is ideal for power

 

sccr box is good to help prevent power loss thru transmission but noisey

i have a straight cut tran-x type 9 and a ceramic paddle clutch

the clutch is on or off it is possible it drive it normally but it takes a bit of getting use to, bit of a bitch in stop start moterway traffic jam's because once it starts to get warm it snatches but apart from that it's fine.

the box is fine for normal road use but it is a little noisy after a 4 hour drive on the moterway in fifth, but it has that really cool wine that makes it sound like a monster so all is forgiven but i would say check the ratio's there telling you it is in 1st because tran-x don't make that ratio (because if they did i would have had it in mine) the lowest first gear they do is 2.49 wich is a lot higher than the 3.65 of a standard type 9 (or 3.19 of the v6 type 9) but most staight cut boxes are 2.25 1st (when i was looking for a second hand box it was all i got offered) which is not far off the second gear in your standard box it could have a custom 1st gear but it's unlikely i'd say go armed with tipex mark the shafts and check and this is the standard ratios

i just found this info hope it helps if it has 2.98 it is an spc sp1 gearbox and their very reasonably priced it might be worth buying one form new here is the info on all three boxes

A new innovation for the type 9 box, comes supplied as a new first mainshaft gear with a modified OEM laygear. This changes the 1st gear ratio of the type 9 from 3.65:1 to 2.98:1. There is a surcharge of £50.00 on the laygear in kit form.

 

Complete gearboxes are available in two formats, a t2performance built box utilising a reclaimed Input shaft, or a Type 9 with a new input shaft. The new input shaft box has a choice of input shafts lengths either the standard 1.6/1.8 length or V6 length input shaft which is aprox an inch longer.

 

Please note the kit will not fit a V6 gearbox.

This gear kit has been around for many years, in its early production 1st and 2nd gears ran as direct onto the mainshaft., this was later revised to 1st and 2nd running on caged needle roller bearings with race. 3rd and 5th gear run direct on the mainshaft.

 

The following components are fitted as new, bearings, rollers, syncroniser rings, seals, circlips and single use fasteners. A t2performance built box would typically contain the following remanufactured components, gearbox housing, shift rail and forks, syncroniser hubs and mainshaft.

The gearkit and box are used in all forms of motorsport, the box works well on 1600 x flows and is often seen on the back of a 2.0l pinto, it is rated by Tran-X at 250 BHP (approx) in there 2008 catalogue. I disagree and would recommend a higher spec box if you have 200+ bhp.
