stevepeanut Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 When I grew up in Washington just outside Newcastle, every kid round our way had a hollowed out turnip with a candle in at halloween. Now I'm in Leeds everyone is in hysterics at my tale cos they have pumpkins here. Anyone else have a turnip, or is it just oop north in Washington?
Fishtailparka Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 I was googling this the other day. We never had turnips, we had swedes. Turnips are tiny! Can you still remember the smell from the candle burning it?

Can you still remember the smell from the candle burning it? my sister in law bought me a tiny turnip the size of a tennis ball, I hollowed it out and carved a face in, then put in a small tea-light, it looked mint
antz Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 everyone up here knows about the turnips but no one does it now. i did a pumpkin that looked stoned
geoffersmasher Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 maybe turnips were the poor mans version of swedes then pumpkins well anyway ive heard of none of it neither have my family on the Yorkshire side when i was a kid i didnt have anything just dreesed up like an idiot made me chuckle though
Fishtailparka Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 I think I have sussed it. The names for turnips and swedes get mixed around a lot depending where you live. Either of them was a poor mans version of a pumkin, cos back then swedes (or turnips) were mainly for cattle feed
FredTransit Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 but turnips are roots and pumpkins are technically fruit!
