danny69 Posted December 11, 2008 Report Posted December 11, 2008 Just wanted to know your thoughts on this. I have had my flywheel refaced and bought a new clutch plate. Now ideally I would also by a new clutch cover but the one I have is a half decent make (Borg & Beck) and isn`t actually scored. And a new one is expensive! It does have a couple of high spots and a slight ridge around the edge but taking 0.2mm (or about 8-10 thou) should clean it up. Is this a big No No? as I realise it could lead to reducing clamping pressure or is it common practice and nothing to worry about?
ratman Posted December 11, 2008 Report Posted December 11, 2008 If your using a pinto get your self to fleetway clutches 02086532287 61 Bensham Grove Thornton heath I use there DA76 its a uprated pinto clutch my pinto is 170Bhp and its been as good as gold i used it when it was in my hot rod ,on the road & up the strip all i used is a AP compertision plate that cost £100 I got a new one 2 months a go and it was £40.00 dam site cheeper and as good as a Ap at £230
danny69 Posted December 12, 2008 Author Report Posted December 12, 2008 Hi, thanks for the reply. Mine is for a Essex V6. I have already bought a new Ford Cosworth plate which is the same as is sold for the Essex, ie. 240mm and 23 spline. I have taken the cover apart (into two pieces) and just have the metal disc like face skim. Looks like an easy enough job so I am surprised it isn`t done more often or atleast talked about. Someone must have some thoughts on this?
hellblue Posted December 12, 2008 Report Posted December 12, 2008 I would'nt fook with it mate if it ever goes bang at 5000rpm you will wish you had fitted a new one,!! they are cheaper than a new pair of feet !!!
danny69 Posted December 12, 2008 Author Report Posted December 12, 2008 The amount I am talking about removing won`t weaken it, the worst that could happen as far as I can see would be the clutch would start slipping a few miles sooner than it would have done with a new cover. But as I only have a 1500 mile a year policy I don`t think that will be too soon.
Fiesta Steve Posted December 12, 2008 Report Posted December 12, 2008 If its just to remove the ridges/high spots then I don't see a problem, surely it wouldn't be any different to it wearing out normally. I'd think it would be fine.
bortaf Posted December 12, 2008 Report Posted December 12, 2008 Look at it this way, every mm you take off the cover is 1 less mm of use you will get out of the friction plate before it starts to slip and in a high torque motor like the essex your loosing the one thing you really really need, clamping force Unless of course you skim the flywheel where the cover sits to make up the amount you take off the ring
