Thinkin of swapping my runabout (98 escort van) for something different, a modern classic maybe xr3i xr2 or mk5 rs2000 I'll have a budget of about £1000 just wondered what you'd go for?

If it's a modern classic you're after I probably wouldn't be looking at anything from Ford.

 

How about a 2.6 litre Merc 190E? RWD motoring for under a grand and teutonic build quality

You might be right about the Merc but it does come with a 160bhp straight six. The 2.3 (185bhp) & 2.5 (202bhp) 16v Cosworth versions are certainly worth having but you won't get one of them for a grand.
