D4N Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 You need to tell your insurance company cos of the details etc but it wont affect your insurance premium

Admin Mk2Jo Posted January 8, 2009 Admin Report Posted January 8, 2009 While you are browsing for a numberplate just have a quick look here as well as the other sites you will be looking at. http://www.dvlaregistrations.co.uk/home I bought M600 OBY for my Scooby (was displayed as M 6000BY ) and only cost me £250.00 all in including VAT and transfer fees. Also bought a plate for Ian (Driver) 40th birthday last year N2 OSF for £250 as well

caprinerd Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 i really cant see the point of personal plates does it make your car go faster or handle better or put more value on it and when you come to sell the car what happens to the plate stays on the motor or pay to have it transfered to me its a serious waste of money and time, never could see the point of it all
Posse Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 Roger its personal my mums getting me one for my birthday as she has my old one on her car its M8 YKT .

JAY PS Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 Ive had J8 YPS for 8 years its been on five cars/vans in that time ,its now a pain when you want to transfer to the next one ,takes too long and waiting for log book is annoying and has lost me buyers in the past . We also had E476 SUE which i bought on a rotten cabstar some years back and was transfered to my Sues cars but she changed her car every 9 months so we sold the plate on ebay for £870 about 5 years ago ,got sick of paying £80 transfer fee Still love the plates but wouldnt do it again ,my Cortina was re-reg some years back as 0GC 107D which i made into OGC 1 OLD when you could alter plates and get away with it (OGC =old green Cortina !)
Ken B Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 I also have a private plate, but something that hadn't crossed my mind is until i read the FAQ on reg transfer website if you are unfortunate to have your car written off for what ever reason, and you are fully comp, you need to get your plate transferred off the car to your new one or put on retention before the insurance company pays out. Unless you buy the car back from them, once you have recieved the payout the car is theirs including your plate. http://www.regtransfers.co.uk/main/faq/ ... en_off.asp
stickerboy Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 I have DMB 9R on my van which obviously stands for DMB 9Raphics. This might be going on the Mk2 when it's done.
Jubfab Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 I also have a private plate, but something that hadn't crossed my mind is until i read the FAQ on reg transfer website if you are unfortunate to have your car written off for what ever reason, and you are fully comp, you need to get your plate transferred off the car to your new one or put on retention before the insurance company pays out. Unless you buy the car back from them, once you have recieved the payout the car is theirs including your plate. http://www.regtransfers.co.uk/main/faq/ ... en_off.asp If you make a claim and the vehicle is total loss you need to put on retention asap - swap onto another is no good as takes too long. If you go to a main transfer office they tend to do it while you wait. Problem is if it's border line you may swap for no reason. And the moment it's recorded on MIAFTA DVLA know and wont allow the transfer or swap (because the plate is part of the car and the insurance have effectively bought your car so in the DVLA's view it belongs to the new keeper - the insurance company). It's simple though all you have to do is request a letter from the insurance company saying they have no interest in the plate and DVLA accept this. All insurance companies abide by this so in reality it's not a problem. oh and i'm a fan of private numbers - the one on my Capri i've had for 21 years now and no way would I sell it. Been on my Capri for 7 years. On my first wedding anniversary I bought my wife a plate for her Festa (1st is paper) so gave her the retention certificate. Went down a storm and she loves it. Like others say it's no good if you swap cars like your underpants. But the Festa (had 4 years and no plans to sell) and Capri are stayers. So no issue for me well thats my 2p
